Well guys, here we are, a flamenco room as requested!

Enjoy, lemme know if you have any issues/suggestions.

Now - let's start with an age-old question sure to make eyes roll. Do I come in on the 12 or the 1? ;)

Cheers!
Dave

Hi Dave:

Thank you for keeping us separate. I may not have been serious when I posted my vote, but Segovia was. :)

Is this room allowed for the real classical flamenco, like TK plays (now without a pick?), or for the new jamming fusion that Paco de Lucia and Omar Lietbert plays, that some others pretend to play?

I suggest that this Flamenco corner be the place where we can exchange opinions, information, material, references, links and whatever else may help us all learn and open our minds to this style at large, irrespective of any stringent rules. You certainly hit the nail on the head, Francisco, by implying that when opening a new category, we need to “define” it. I think that for purposes of this corner all should feel free to post to the extent each feels that certain guitars, strings, pieces or musicians fall into this category.

We have outstanding flamencos in this crowd, Todd as you mentioned, and our very own historical “NFalla” along with recording artist Richard Marlow who occasionally posts here. There are of course many others, and some who play both classical and flamenco and even other “crazy” mutations, such as Electric Guitar (I think NFalla and even Perfecto are guilty of such exoteric science).

Hence, if you (we) have a question, an answer or want to share interesting information about what one believes to be Flamenco, Flamenco Fusion, or Influenced by Flamenco, here is “one” possible place.

Francisco Vega,

Paco de Lucia and Ottmar Liebert in the same sentence. Shame on you.

Francisco,
Watch it! I'm a huge fan of Todd's playing. ;)

Nick,
How about I surprise everyone by doing nothing until the 3? ;) That's a classic move.

Isn't the only requirement for membership to know the definition of an Andalucian cadence? :)

Didn't PDL invent Ottmar?
Entre Dos Aguas is a terrific rumba that became the inadvertant father of a thousand bad variants.

Isn't "Classical gas" the rosetta stone of modern flamenco?

I don't think so, but ....... perhaps Mason Williams was a closet flamenco. ;-) I do think that Mason Williams was responsible for many, many people getting into the nylon string guitar. Back then, steel string was for the masses and nylon was not very popular. Of course bossa nova was also a great influence for the nylon string instrument. So, that is a good thing, just like PdL's rumba.

the story i have heard is: classical gas was played on a steel string guitar.

I believe it recorded on a classical guitar with steel stings installed. I read this somewhere, don't remember where. Maybe it was his website.

His website does list the guitars that he used on his recordings and personal appearances.

steel strings on a classical guitar....yikes. well i guess we are all correct...classical guitar and steel strings. i wonder how long that guitar survived with steel strings.

Mason Williams claims to still use that guitar. It was a gift from Tom Smothers of the Smothers brothers.

A set of very light gauge steel strings may not have done too much harm to the guitar. Especially if the strings were only used for a short time.

I would imagine that Williams wanted to brighten the sound of his classical guitar for the recording. He could have used a flamenco guitar to achieve that goal. ;-)
