Hi All,

New to the forum here. I'd like to introduce myself a bit before asking some questions. I've been playing mostly classical guitar for about 12 years (I was lucky enough to have started out with classical and not in the garage). While a music major with guitar as my specialization, I studied abroad in Granada, Spain and had a chance to take weekly lessons with a flamenco guitarist there. I also got hooked up from a friend and was able to attend all kinds of awesome flamenco lectures and cante concerts with the local flamenco society. I learned a ton and played quite a bit. Flamenco got put on hold to do some of my classical recitals and stuff, and now I've decided to get back into it after not picking up the guitar for a few months.

I have some books as well as my handwritten falsetas from the teacher in Granada. I'll be working through those and listening to a ton of cante and toque. My questions are this. Do you guys know of any teachers in the San Diego, CA area? I know there's the guy that plays a lot at Cafe Sevilla, but I think his students end up all playing the same 5-10 solos all the same way.

Also, has anyone on the forum had a gig accompanying singers/dancers? I'm more interested in the traditional flamenco roles of a guitar player than being a crazy solo man.

Thanks for the info,

Jason

Hello my name is Rene I know of probaly the best Flamenco players and teachers in San Diego

1. David De alva he started playing at Tablo Flamnco about 258years ago then his mother opened up Cafe Seville Him and his wife Rosa payed there for about 15 years untill his family sold the bussiness. He definatly JAMMS!!!
He probaly has the most experiance with dancers and singers than anyblody from San Diego to Santa Barbara with the exception of Tananka Dave gets the most work out there. He palys Sabicas and Paco Lucia along with Vicente Amigo. He is more a performer than teacher
he has a web site check it out.

My nexy suggetsion is Diego Corrdoba he is a concert level player that plays fansttic but is difficult to get along with sometimes. He can't touch Dave on accomplment but he is the best soloist out there.

Any new generation guitarist out ther now does not have these guys petagry

Great Googly Moogly

Is ok Rene. Our forum members are very forgiven. I don't know if English is your first language. Mine is Spanish. Although I have lived in the USA for many years, sometimes I have to take my time writing in English.

Hi,

I can highly recommend Diego Corriente...truly one of the best players with years of experience as a soloist and with dancers... and a fantastic teacher.

He has a web site: http://www.traditionalflamenco.com/

I heard David de Alva last night at Costa Brava. I don't know that I was too impressed with his performance from a purist/traditional standpoint. I'd love to hear him accompany some time, but it doesn't sound like he does that too much anymore. He is a gifted player, but I don't know if I heard what I was looking for. Maybe when the time comes for lessons I'll check out Mr. Corriente or some of the people that are already accompanying for some local dance studios.
