I've been listening to Carlos Montoya lately, and I've really enjoyed his stuff. It's on the traditional side, but he keeps his work interesting without adding any band or whatever. Occasionally he has some palmas, but it's mostly just him on the guitar.
The one thing that I've noticed is that his tremolo is really hit and miss. Some tunes it's quick, light and flowing. Other tunes it's a mess. His picado is brilliant, as are his rasgueados. Tremolo, though? Not as good as the rest of his playing. Granted everything he does is a million times better than my playing, but I just had an observation.
Any fans or haters of Carlos Montoya out there?

I have several of his albums which I enjoy very much.
His playing is somewhat idiosyncratic (at least).
There are some who do not like him at all.
His uncle was a famous player, Ramon Montoya,
but they did not get along.
He was an accompanist for a number of years, before
becoming the first career soloist in flamenco.
His style is unique.

there have been many posts about mr. montoya--see the threads from years gone by. the general opinion of the flamenco crowd: he was a hack. but, he made a ton of money playing his hack so who am i to say. personally i find it painful to listen to him: his 60 second ligados, his inability to stay within compas, his repetitious picardo runs and his general blase playing. if i have $15 to spend on an old school flamenco c.d. it would be sabicas, ricardo, or the original montoya. but carlos.....it is a toss up between carlos and mr. little hands of silver as to who i would listen to if i accidently swallowed poison and had to barf it up.

....especially our comments Tony!
But in this rather exhaustive example of video wonder, I believe the device and instrument shine through equally and compliment the overall visage completely....
Our resident cejilla afficionados may enjoy rapt appreciation towards the co-star of this clip, and quite possiblly find the added benefit of my capitulation in a certain regard to be quite refreshing as the week unfolds... ;)
As always,

Two things about Carlos Montoya
He was commercialized quite a bit so I don't think his playing was totally his own selection.
Second, he became famous later in life, and while some people get better with age, some do not. Not everyone had Segovia's endurance. He was older when most of his recordings were done.
With all due respects.
I'd be content to play as well as he did, btw.

Carlos is complicated. His recordings the early ones w/ cuadro , dancers and singers are right on.
The solo records were later and very sucessful. He developed Parkinson's later in life which caused alot of problems. He would detune the guitars a step or two.He was a giant hit w/ the public w/ his florid ligados etc.
His Uncle Ramon was the genius.
i found when i began to accompany dancers his recordings were a big help.
