View Full Version : flamenco guitar with 64 cm scale
Hello,
I have an old guitar (1950) by Jose MAS Y MAS (VALENCIA), with a smaller body and a scale 64 cm long.
Playing it is easier than my others guitars (RAMIREZ, FERRER, CONDE, CONTRERAS, FAVINO).
Does somebody know if spanish guitarmakers build some great flamenco guitars with 64 cm scale.
Thanks for return of yours experiences.
I'm not sure how the shorter scale would work for a flamenco, but most makers would likely make one for you on special order. Google Raya Pardo's site.

Many makers will build a 64cm scale length, although for a flamenco (usually 65.5 or 66cm) this is a little unusual.
That being said, I have a 64cm blanca coming to me within a month or so, custom order from Johnny Walker of Oklahoma. And I have a 2004 64cm blanca by Darren Hippner as well. Both work just fine for my purposes.

jd55: as the other posters stated 640 is not the norm for flamenco (and classical) guitars. that said, a 640 scale should work as the functional difference is only 5mm from frets 1 to 12 (the difference between a 640 and 650). you should be able to put a cejilla on fret 6 without any trouble (it is rare if non existent to put a cejilla on fret 7 or higher) and remain with the fret space. as to great guitars, well that is relative but all the guitars that are considered "great" flamenco guitars range from 650 to 664. i suspect the only way to get a 640 flamenco is to have it built for you.

I bought a 600mm flamenco from luthier Peter Tsiorbas.
It's like you have a cejilla on 2 when open but the pitch is standard. It took about 30 seconds to adapt.Capoed on 4 it screams.Peter made several w/ different strings lengths to see what actually happened instead of listening to theories of what might be.
I'd say there is no reason for alarm w/ shorter string lengths.
I sold the guitar to my small 7 year old student so i still get to play it.
