Hey All,

I'm going to be starting a solo gig pretty soon at a friend's restaurant. He's ok with more traditional sounding stuff (I've been working out of Juan Martin's el Arte and Dennis Koster's books, as well as doing some dance accompaniment), but I was wondering if there are any resources for some more modernish pieces/books that aren't absurdly hard to play? I'd love to mix up my repertoire a bit now that I'll actually be playing for live people! Most of Paco/Tomatito's stuff is just brutally hard, but I don't know of any intermediate type things that have a similar sound.

Thanks for all your input!

Don't recall how I found this, but I had downloaded a PDF of "easy flamenco" pieces from:

http://www.hochweber.ch/guitar.htm

Don't know how "modern" they sound, but hey, the price is right to at least check it out. ;)

You mentioned "Pieces", but you shouldnt think that way while learning flamenco.
Flamenco doesnt really work like that. You learn falsettas, and compas, and they
are strung together. Rarely ever will you see a flamenco guitarist play the same thing the same way twice. Especially modern players. They constantly change the order
of falsettas, edit falsettas, add new ones, interject crazy remates, etc etc..
Its a language, and it is very improvisational, very similar to Jazz improvisation.

So its pretty much totally unrelated to pop or classical music.

That said, i would say the answer is, you have to start slowly with modern falsettas
and compas. The way Dennis Koster states the compas in Bulerias for instance, is
worlds away from the way modern players like Vicente Amigo, or Pedro Sierra state
the compas.
No sense in trying to learn and play a complete work by Paco, or Gerardo. Or even
the "relatively" easy modern material.
But you can eventually do that down the road of course. But you cant start there.
Start with basics. Small chunks of falsettas and stating compas in modern style.
