Hello, I am new to the forum. I am a classical musician by trade (harpsichordist) and new to the world of guitars. I have taught myself some classical guitar reportoire some years back but am now hoping to delve into the world of flamenco.
Hello! A bit of intro: My name's Ted (Spanish Teo). I became fascinated with the guitar at a very early age, watching my uncle make these fine instruments, and playing them. What a beautiful sound! It took 50 years to my getting around to playing this fine instrument, but I guess it's better late than never. Anyway, I appreciate the privilege of being on board. I hope to learn and pass on what I've learned.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I have been playing steel folk/fingerstyle/acoustic guitar for about 30 years. I began to study classical almost two years ago. I am a mom, a nurse, a guitarist, and a guitar teacher. I teach a guitar program at a local school. The classical guitar has been a whole new world to me, and is very exciting. I'm hoping to learn as well as share what I can with all of you.

Hello, My name is Bryan and I have been playing guitar for the past 25 years. I have been frustratingly giving a go at the classical guitar. My background is as a rock guitarist but have always been in love with the classical. I have recently decided to focus all of my attention to the classical and expand my guitar abilities. Looking forward to chating and learning from all of you.

Hi, my name is Larry and I cant believe I found a forum for acoustic guitars!
I dont have a guitar as yet-tho I have had a few in the past, and am hoping Santa claus will bring me a new one this year :D
My partner wants to buy me one for xmas so we visited a guitar shop recently.I got that weird feeling in my guts seeing all those Martins and Crafters up on the walls.
You know the feeling!
So how is everyone, and what guitars you all got?

Hi Everyone!
I'm brand new to the forum. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years. I'm experienced with acoustic and electric I've been involved with the following styles : Jazz, Blues, Rock, Folk, Country, Raggae, Latin, etc. I'm a begining Bass guitarist.
At this point in time my primary focus will be on classical guitar. It was always a passion of my but I never really had the time to focus on it. Now I have all the time in the world I'm recently retired from law enforcement but nowhere near a senior citizen.
I look forward to interacting and sharing with all of you! Take Care! Stay Safe!

hey -
I'm Marc. I've been playing classical a very long time and make some of my income playing in public. I've been concentrating on Bach for much of my guitar life, but I willingly play anybody, if I like it. I even got a Strat recently. I want to create a new kind of sound, a BACH/ROCK fusion, but I'm finding out that inventing something new is as hard as it sounds.

Hello there,
I'm an amateur classical guitarist from Brazil, currently living in Argentina. I play a wide variety of stuff - Brazilian, Latin-American, Baroque, Romantic Music, some Jazz, even Beatles and folk arrangements for CG.
I've been visiting this site almost daily since I discovered it in January 2004. In july 2004 I purchased a guitar from GSI - a wonderful Sebastian Stenzel!
Greetings to all.

Hello flamenco and classical guitar aficionados!!
This is my first time using this forum. About myself; I have been playing guitar for 12 years. I have spent the last 3 years studying flamenco with a local professional guitarist. I play a Cordoba 75F and I use Savarez 520R high tension strings. I am interested in your opinions on the Conde Hermanos A26. Also, any advice on ways to learn the 12 count compas would be appreciated. I look forward to learning more about flamenco and guitar in general from this forum.
Take Care,

I've been enjoying the forum for some time so it only seems reasonable to pipe up and introduce myself. I'm studying/playing classical guitar after enjoying acoustic for close to 20 years. I'ts an exciting world and I'm enjoying every frustration and experience. I'm playing an Esteve student model 1GR3E. I'm struggling to find time to practice, but I'm sure I'm not alone in that dept. Thanks for all the info and contagious enthusiasm.

Hello,
I mainly play bass but I recently bought an Antonio Loriente Clarita CD/IR.
I studied CG for a while when I was a teenager and I have gotten back into it again.
Just yesterday I received my glass nail file and a set of Dogals in the mail from GSI.
I'm a Talkbass regular and I look forward to exploring this place, too!

I've come back to the guitar after about 25 years
Welcome stringstudent. I think the experience of returning to the classical guitar after having it in the closet for many years is a common one, based on what I've read here and other forums. I'm in that category myself, perhaps with a 15-year hiatus. What happens, I think, is that family and career becomes such an overwhelming priority in your 30s and 40s that it's hard to devote sufficient time to playing. Probably not a bad subject for a separate thread.
you know thats what happened to me too. School and my career in the military prevented me from playing and practicing. It took three years before i picked up my guitara agian.

Hey All,
Thanks for the welcomes! I'm sooooo excited to have a forum for something I really like instead of just school work (my previous experience with forums).
I agree that I've read about many who have returned to the classical guitar after years away. I believe having played a piece, or even a note, well once dooms the player to a lifetime love affair with this instrument. In my case, I lost interest as a teenager, when sports, cars and girls became more important than practicing. Also, (I can see now) I wasn't practicing and studying the right way - to really learn the instrument and the music, but instead was just practicing pieces for recitals.
I wanted to return to the study not so much because I had more time (was working full time, working on a Masters Degree, working on a marriage, and working on my other hobbies), but more because I always felt it was a beautiful thing to play well and I regretted not having stayed with it. I wanted to have it as part of the rest of my life - a lifelong student.
It is inspiring to read the postings of so many people who care so deeply about the guitar. I hope to be able to contribute. I have certainly enjoyed reading your thoughts, ideas and knowledge.

Hello Everyone, name is Louis (aka Chino) from the Los Angeles Area, I have been coming to GuitarSalon for like 8 years now. Just drooling over the Guitars they offer here, which I could not possibly afford (not on a guitar), at least not yet. I never realized, or had occured to me that there was a forum on here, Awesome!
I've been playing the Classical Guitar for like 10 years now. Not regularly, but sporadically. For the last couple of months, i pick up the guitar just about daily. In the past, I would get frustrated, because I was unable to get to play the higher positions. I mean I would play pieces where I was all over the place, but it wouldn't stick. I am now taking a direct approach, just trying different techniques reading different books and I will learn it. I'll scan this forum to see what has been written or recommended in getting over the hump. Oh, and I've started on Scales (ugh!) something I've hated to do. But I hear, you have to tackle them eventually to grow as a player.
Well, I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum and looking foward to corresponding with you all.

Hello & Welcome Chino31 !!!................. :)
lots of knowlegable and helpful people here.........
Hello everyone,
I thought I'd join up after more than a year of reading the threads on this forum. By day, I work in a music store in the french-speaking part of Switzerland, selling and setting-up guitars. By night, I try to find some time to play them.
I started on electric guitar as a teenager in '89, studied instrument-making in London (UK), learned to play the flute and then came back seriously to the guitar in 2001. I have been taking classical lessons for two years after finding something in the nylon-strung instrument that was missing on electric. Started from scratch (esp. RH), and am now working my way through Brouwer, Sor, Aguado etc..
Passion makes up for what I lack (a lot) in natural talent, and so far I haven't performed classical guitar in front of anyone but my teacher and the people who come in to the store and ask me to show them a particular instrument.
This forum is a mine of information that has helped me considerably, and I hope to contribute what little I can to the discussions and continue to learn.

Welcome DJH. My aunt's mother used to live in Lausanne so I spent several summers there when I was a child.
What's the name of the store you work in? What kinds of guitars do they carry?
Tim
Thanks, Tim.
Did you like Lausanne ? It's really wonderful in the summer. Winter is often less inviting, but we are still waiting for winter this year on the shores os Lac Léman...
The store is part of a very old, small swiss chain (we are the sole branch in the french-speaking region, the rest are in the germanophone part). Of course I only work at the store as an employee and therefore probably shouldn't mention its name.
In classical guitars we go from entry-level Cuencas and Almansas up to the Ramirez SP level, with a handful of luthier pieces dotted in amongst the more industrially-produced instruments. Asturias and Hanika are regularly in stock.
Have you come across Oscar Trezzini, a swiss luthier ? Pretty special concert guitars. Small production, mainly customer order though he does sell some through stores (not ours, as the local customers will go direct to him). Worth checking out, I think he has a website. Maurice Ottiger is also worth investigating, but I think his waiting list is particularly long.
Otherwise, we do the gamut of electric and steel-string, plus everything you could possibly plug into, but my main interest is the classical guitar (and the lute, that I hope to one day learn to play - Julian Bream is an inspiration). For the moment we don't sell used instruments (not enough space for the stock as it is), but we do see some very interesting guitars in for repair and re-conditioning.
Thanks again for the welcome,
Dominic[/code]

Dominic,
Yes, I loved Lausanne in those years. I haven't been back since sometime in the 1960's but it was spectacular.
Interesting about your store. I wonder if your store might be interested in carrying the Loriente guitar line. Our sister company imports and distributes them here in the US and they have representation in Japan, Germany, Italy and England.
Here is a link to the new site:
http://www.lorienteguitars.com
Let me know if you think this might be a good fit and we can put the buyers of your chain and the right people on our end in touch.
If you haven't tried one, Lorientes are the only example of a production priced guitar with concert level workmanship and concernt quality sound that I know of They are also affordable in the range of $1800 to $4800 retail.
Let me know if you'd like to discuss further via email at:
tim@gsinterinc.com
All the best,
Tim

ya see charles F vega,
let me clear this up with a little history
lesson for you. you have shown contempt for gsi
HERE and over at AC mag. you 'migrated' here to attack
Jubi, once you got called on that B/R loriente line, (signature also),
you changed your name to hide who you are.
i for one, will not let you mock this forum with your post.
coward is the word that comes to mind when iberianwolf yawns.
all the propper letters are caps when needed, this forum isn't
a writing class. it's just easier. i'm not the only one but,
you've just had a hard-on for jubi's friends. notice i've never posted
over at AG? stay on your side of the track 'tuff guy'
i read your article, just a bunch of info that's been floating
around for almost ever. nothing NEW there. not very
creative i'd say. but hey, i don't use caps....DUHH!!
again, i urge folk to search the forum for c.f.vega posts and see that
he has no respect for gsi. just a childish move to get revenge
for a stamped name and some b/r. you are a joke charles.
why is it, everyone must believe you because 'you said so' but,
you knock everyone/thing you don't know about??
btw, psy WAS my bag so, i figure i could still
help you sort through your anger, that is, if i gave a damn.
good luck everyone(again)
p.s. why were you nice to blackshear over at AG but, not so
nice when posting as the omega wolf here? (get it)
only your silly crap bothers me because you
act like a little angel who say's, "who, me?"
sorry for the come-back, i needed to stress those
final points..............over and out

Hi Charlie: I saw you black and white picture on the AG magazine (the editorial article). You look about 55 in the photo. That was before color photographs. That put you in your 80's? No wonder you know so much. Is that a 10 string guitar you made?

hey g.s.i.--it is difficult to trust whether something will be posted or edited when the error message, debugging problems, pops up. so i edited my last post and am posting this as a reply.
brian, if you read c.vega article you will notice that c.vega mentioned cordoba--a guitar for all practical purposes tied to g.s.i. and a cordoba picture was used as well. this suggests that c.vega is not anti-g.s.i. if you go back and read the posts you mention you will notice that c.vega is not putting down g.s.i. but rather is challenging g.s.i.'s behavior--in this case using the words, brazillian rosewood when the genus/species of the wood was in question. again, it was g.s.i.'s behavior and not g.s.i. that was being challenged. saying a behavior is bad is NOT the same as saying the person (or company) is bad.

Hello there, First time for me. I've played on and off for 40 years, mostly off. Only the last 3 years have I taken it seriously. I hope to make it to an intermediate level in this lifetime. A few thoughts: I recently bought a guitar from Eric Monrad, cedar and Mad. rosewood. Anyone familiar with Monrad guitars? Also, some one was asking about Gymnopedie #1. I found a good arrangement by Teja Gerken in Acoustic Guitar magazine a few months ago. Welles

First off, welcome Welles. My suggestion is you start a separate thread on that good topic because it will be buried here.
I've played a Monrad and liked it a lot. Good volume, nice round sound. I considered it a bit pricey at the time for the mistaken reason that I thought his guitars were unknown.

Hello All,
After a long time lurking I've decided to go ahead and join this forum. I've enjoyed the discussions and the high level of engagement. I am an amateur player of almost 20 years though many of those years were spent dormant or strumming chords to lead small group singing. Now I play just for myself and with my family. I'm also on the AC and Delcamp forums.

I am new too and followed this forum long before I joined. I still don't post much (mostly links to Youtube).
I have a similar background as you. In college, my piano teacher took me to see Paco Pena, Assad Brothers, Kronos Quartet....she taught me lots. Before that, I worshipped Michael Hedges. I had a dormant guitar period but still ended up collecting 200 gigs of music -- non critical listening!!!!.

I joined this forum to hopefully receive some insight into breaking through a wall that I have hit. I desire to play professionally. I have been playing now for six years. I can breeze through most classical pieces written in the first 4 frets. I can play Lagrima, Sounds of Bells, Romanza, some francisco tarrega preludes, matteo carreisi (forgive the spelling), simple canon in D. However, I feel as though my playing is a struggle. I am self taught from books written in standard notation and tablature. I play by sight with tab and pick up the rhythm from the standard notation.
My weakness is in my 3rd and 4th finger on the left hand on 4th, 5th and 6th strings.
What approach should I take next in breaking through what seems to be a stuck point. Do I practice left and right hand technique? Do I pick up the hardest piece that I can find and master it technically. What will help be become a better player and help me understand technique and the guitar overall.
Help!

Hello all, my name is Chris, and I'm a wannabe classical guitarist. I'm primarily an orchestral double bass player, but I've been playing the guitar as a casual, personal musical hobby for about 27 yrs. I had an opportunity to switch majors from bass to guitar when I was a junior in college, but I chose not to - I get much more work as a bassist! I just recently took the plunge and am having my very first concert guitar made for me - it is due to be finished at the end of this month, or the middle of next. I'm SO thrilled about it. I've perused the threads in this forum for the past few months and found the info quite useful.

Welcome aboard. And don't be dissuaded by Locust's "out of the loop" comment regarding the Hausers in the "article" thread. I'm certain he was saying that with tongue slightly in cheek, and if it's any consolation, Segovia wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Strat and a Tele, and wouldn't have been able to get those catcher-mitt fingers on the neck of either. Many of us on the forum go back and forth between classical and electric (I got a Boss BD-2 pedal for Christmas/Hanukkah myself this year), and the world can always use a new classical player.

Hello,
I'm a student of one of the posters here.
I've read this forum on many occasions, but I thought now would be a good time to join.
I have the advantage of knowing some of you through the kind things that have been said about you.
While others only from what you have posted here.
I have been playing electric guitar for about 15 years in Rock and Blues cover bands. I have also played in numerous Jam Bands.
About 6 years ago a friend of mine told me to come with him and see these 2 guys play Flamenco guitar at a Gallery.
I had never heard Flamenco played live before and I have always been a fan of the old records of Montoya and Sabicas I would find in used places. So you can imagine my enthusiasm to go.
The experience changed my life in music for ever !
At the end of the show I walked up to the 2 gypsy guitarists, and asked if they gave lessons. One of them told me yes he did.
I then explained that my intention was not to learn "Flamenco" but to learn the "Techniques" to play a flamenco guitar using the proper way of doing it, as I was until then only a pick player at that time.
He again replied saying "No problem !".
He knew what I meant about not wanting to learn "Flamenco" and had no problem with that . I felt right then and there this was the person to teach me.
As a couple of other flamenco teachers in the area refused to teach me unless I learned the traditional flamenco songs. In which I always replied, "But I'm just a guy from the Midwest and have never been anywhere else ? I just don't think I would ever understand the Traditional parts of it." I'm also not really interested in that part of it.
I just want to play it for me using the proper right hand techniques as I think that's what really gives it that cool sound.
I have no intentions of "Being" anyone in music or trying to make a living at it.
I just like to free jam on it and improvise other peoples songs.
I'm really just a free jam man and am happy being that way.
On the other hand, I'm always willing to learn what I can.
Thanks and Glad to be here !

Hi All,
I've just joined GSI. It's good to have contact with guitarists around the world. I've started playing again this year after a 13 year break. I'm looking forward to learning from other guitarists and perhaps I can contribute something useful too. The www is such a great way of gathering info on guitar related stuff and communicating with guitar people. I have a bias towards folk-type classical guitar eg tango, gypsy, celtic.
Best wishes to all.

Guitarbuddha
08-12-2008, 11:58 AM
Nope Richard my nails can't stand it. I do occasionally play electric/blues guitar but that is mostly single lines with a pick. I don't really have a good thumb mute for Travis Picking cause the edge of my thumb tends to catch the string and I don't really like the feel of my hand being that low. Also although I love to hear good well muted fingerstyle I really cant get used to the sound of it coming out of MY guitar. I just make do with my standard(ish) classical technique.

I use D'addario EJ50 full set.
-Amalio Burguet 1a cedar 1994
I use D'addario EJ46 bass set & Hannabach Titanyl treble set.
-Viroon Songbandhit (Thailand's Luthier)
german spruce top, maple B&S install LR baggs under bridge
I use Hannabach Titanyl bass set & D'addario EJ50 treble set.
After I been use many brand of strings.I finally found that the D'addario EJ50
black nylon treble match well with spruce top (I still can't belive it)
And I hope this may be useful for you.

I am trying to Identify my guitar by headstock. All labels are gone and even though there is a number at the heel of the fretboard inside the body and a remnant of a luthier mark, (a partial crown inside a circle), the headstock is the only means I can see to identify this instrument. I will state that I picked it up in a flea market type store in New Hampshire for very little and it is a wonderful piece of work. Has wonderful tone even though not sustained. I had to replace the machines but other than a little patchwork on a thumb pounded top, and refinishing it is a great player. I have recently tried to identify without success.

Along with a "signature" headstock, many luthiers/manufacturers also use a distinctive rosette, so it might help if you could post a pic of that as well.

This is a little shot of the rosette on the guitar. I hope you can tell me something of this instrument.

Welcome aboard!
But come on, you can't just say you've got a new guitar on order without telling us what it is. :p

Hello all.
I am new to this forum and i thought i should introduce myself.
I've been learning classical guitar for about four and a half years and I am currently on grade 6 AMEB (australian music examinations board). I also play viola and piano and i am quite a prolific composer. I have a particlular passion for atonal music.
My favourite guitar performers are Slava and Leonard Grigoryan.
