I have noticed that Williams's playing style is very different from what Pepe Romero applies.williams's sound seems more sharp and compct, but i do find it sometimes a bit too 'machanical' whereas with Pepe Romero, his playing is very smooth and fluid but loses out on clarity.
Much has been said about how they both measure up,but please give your opinion on these two great guitarists.....Thank You......

Why Williams versus Romero?
What do YOU gain by discussing this theme?
Both great guitar players without question.
Who is your favorite and why?

I'm afraid I agree with Ed on this one, theres far too much of this comparison stuff in the classical world.

william's playing is different from that of romero maybe because they underwent different training, different teachers and most probably their techniques and positions(right hand). they are from different countries. they're both great guitar players. thank you.

Both players are great, of course, but significantly different in style and sound. Williams is more "classical" while Romero is flamenco-like, in my opinion (listen carefully to the sound of his 3rd string.) William's recording of JS Bach 4 Lute Suites are still unparalleled, and Romero is the best interpreter of Joquin Rodrigo's music.

Why do you think that Williams recording of Bach's lute suites are unparalleled? Curious, because i totally disagree(my subjective humble opinion)

It's tough to compare the two. But I'd have to give an edge to Pepe Romaro for his amazing versatility. I've seen him in concert several times and can say that he is very precise and perhaps a bit more fluid than John Williams. Both are superb.

You are correct. Williams is a machine head. Romero is an artist. Not all that can play play well.

Both are great artists! I often load up my CD player with CD's of the same piece played by different artists. Not one of the great players play alike. This is to be expected - we are human, not digital robots. As I listen to each piece I find that one artist will emphasize things that another artist doesn't. The pieces take on different colors depending on the artist. For me, this is a great study in musicianship, as I work to develope my own artistry.

that cd would be interesting to hear! but just to repeat some concepts already mentioned, williams is (or is now) a very straight forward classical guitarist. the seville concert, is a perfect example of his fluency and precision. williams's older recordings are said to have more feeling and depth. by far, mangore: suene en la floresta, from the seville concert, is john williams's best recording, if you ask me.

jw was taught by segovia, and i am unsure who taught pepe romero - probably his father. and pepe's soud is obviously more spanish.

but both make beautiful music.
