I just came back to playing after a 10 year absence. After a couple of hours of practice session I felt some tightness on the left hand, so I'm wondering whether it's normal or I had my hand position wrong. Also, can you get carpal tunnel from playing guitar?
In short, is there such a thing as too much practice?

I had the same problem and did some research on the question. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may develope from too much playing. There are some good web sites. Google search "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". I found a good exercise for the tightness problem. Hold your left arm straight out in front of you and make a fist. Then rotate your hand at the wrist until the thumb points down. You can feel the stretch in the muscles concerned. As with any form of exercise, stretching your hands and forarms can prevent problems from developing.

It is the same for just about anything physical. If you stay away from it you will be sore. The pain is a sign to rest. You may want to simply play something easier at that point.
I have big fat hands and they too will hurt when I do not play much. However, for me, if I am playing regularly I can play for many hours at a time and feel fine, even at 47 years old. I have noticed over the years that people with very pliable joints cannot play too long. But again there may not be any hard fast rules about this. Much depends on WHAT you are playing.
My teacher is a monster player at 80 years old. No lie.

the addage "no pain no gain" doesn't work here.
if you're feeling pain, back off.
I recommend seeing your local Alexander Technique professional.
They work with you while you play to make sure your back is aligned in order to avoid nerve problems and help create longer years of playing.
just a thought - I'm going to one wednesday as my posture is horrible and is causing me the same type of problem.
Also, I'm considering using this person to do clinics on the classical guitar cruise as she's been working with classical musicians and opera signers for years and I feel as though it would be a benefit to the artists and guitars aboard this festival event.
Best of luck
