View Full Version : Book for a Beginner
Hey Guys,
I have bin playing guitar (Classical) for a couple of weeks now, and i have had 2 lessons and am having another lesson 2morrow.
I will be having one lesson a week (30 mins) and i play about 2-3 hours a day, but i do get bored of playing the same stuff all the time that my guitar teacher has taught me...
Are there any good books out there that r basic yet interesting and help new players develop a better skill and technique on the guitar; many arpeggios, warm up excercises and other fingereing excercises.
If so, could u let me know, as i want to buy my first guitar book :D
Thx...
Olly

Hey Olly
Check out Fernando Sor and his Studies post.
I would also recommend visiting this site based in Nottingham for a good selection of what your looking for;

I would recommend Solo Guitar Playing by Frederick M. Noad. I have been using this book for over a year and I find his exercises to be precise and excellent for developing good technique. You won’t waste your time with this book. This book gives you easy songs to learn and they keep getting progressively harder as you learn the fretboard and your left hand gets stronger and your music reading will greatly improve too. Check on Amazon.com or at www.noad.com, or maybe at your local guitar shop.
Thx a lot,
I am looking at the webbys now

Hi Olly,
Parkening also has a couple of method books. I have them both. Volume I would be a good one for you. :)

Aaron Shearer Classic Guitar Technique Book 1 - would be a great start. As would Pumping Nylon.
Why not ask your teacher to give you more music to play with between lessons? He'll know your capabilities and interests and should be able to find some things to challenge and stimulate you.
"50 Classical Guitar Pieces" by Joseph Harris. The music is also in tablature form and I have found it really helpful since I am a beginner and not very proficient in reading standard notation. My only problem is finding actual recordings of the music so I can tell wether I am playing them correctly. THe guy should have put out an accompanying cd to the book. GSI must set up a members' performance section to showcase playing skills as others have suggested so those of us who aren't as advanced can tune in and hear how a song is supposed to sound.

The Shearer books are good - vol 1 is technique and vol 2 is the music associated with the technique lesson in vol 1. For music check out the easy to early intermediate reprt. book from Scott Tennet / Pumping Nylon. Good stuff that has been selected by Scott to go with the Pumping Nylon, describes which techniques each piece works. Some are written by Scott and other contempories while others are classics (Sor, Guliani, etc.)

Scott Tennants "Pumping Nylon" - be sure to get the DVD as well (which follows the book), there is no substitute for seeing well executed technique.

I have to agree with the recommendations of the "Pumping Nylon" series by Scott Tennant. I still return to Scott's books often to find and improve weaknesses in my playing, and to keep my technique healthy.
