The video clip is very impressive, the Bach Lute Suite in E Major, by John Williams. The clip, if I'm not mistaken, is from the Seville Concert, a concert VHS I recently acquired and is awesome. The hour lnog concert displays John Williams' fluency, efficiency and flair through some of the most gruelling pieces in the classic guitarist's repertoire.
the following hour on the video tape offers a view on some of the composers for guitar, details John Williams' history, his ideals on performance and even takes you to Greg Smallman's outback guitar-building shack - and most of the second half is set in Australia!!!
I enjoyed this video immensly, and would recommend it to anyone.

Tango En Skaii is a nice piece. And you're right, there isn't much of classical community here in Singapore. I'm not sure if there are more active communities overseas though. Did you go to the recent Esplanade event?Lots of prominent guitarists were there.

Hello buddy.... long time no see... I'm back...
the piece this week is truely a master work..the grand overture of Mauro GIULIANI, .... the first time i heard this was played by Julian Bream on a cassette i bought 20 years back. guess what, the cassette i have is still in very good condition and i never stop listening to it. this time, u see this plays by a ??? (japanese/korean??)..
in my opinion, he playing is only 30% of what you can enjoy from the great Julian Bream performance...
but still quite nice to listen to this piece over and over.... one thing i don like is his face expression... too much face expression in performance can prove to be distracting.
http://melos.cau.ac.kr/zboard/data/grand.wmv
... my last word on this... if you really want to learn this piece, get that Julian Bream version, you will be moved to tear...

That is a very entertaining piece, sseow. Thank you once again. Regarding his facial expressions, I don't see them as a distraction - it adds to the entertainment of the perfomance as a whole. I enjoyed it immensly, which means I should like to ear the bream version. What album of bream's is his version from?
NGiorgio
11-11-2003, 02:16 PM
The Grand Overture was very well played. What a great sounding Fleta guitar. As to facial expressions, that was nothing compared to Julian Bream. Anyone who has seen Bream in concert will know what I mean.
sseow
11-13-2003, 03:27 PM
well.... i must say bream's expression is truely from his heart... i ever seen him jump off the chair when he plays the albeniz's seville... he plays truely with his soul.. that is different from this asian guy.
that bream's album i bought about 20 years back when i was in college... tat is from a company, i don know if they still exist, Supreme Ltd. no. 9048.
in tat album, bream plays also the diabelli: sonata, giuliani: sonata op. 15, henze, sor op. 14...
very good quality album. if supreme still exist, they should publish this on cd

This is interesting. By clicking on the "previous" link at the bottom of the Segovia clip, if you go back about three or four links, you get to one of John Williams playing a Scarlatti sonata in D minor. And the interesting thing is that the clip shows the man who's renowned for his fantastic technique with a left thumb that, on several occasions, peeks above the top of the fretboard. That's supposed to be such a bad thing, and yet here he is doing it.....Kind of gives the rest of us hope, you know?

She appears to be a young teenager, but her playing is highly polished and very beautiful--much like John Williams, slightly reserved with amazing control.

that young teenager playing is LiJie... she is a talented player in china. this video came from a 6 CD series master class conducted by her teacher, chenzhi, who is renowed guitar professor in china, feature once in the UK's "Classical Guitar" magazine...
i bought this 6 CD master class with full scores when i was in china sometime back, where she plays all the all time great master pieces of bach, barrios, lauro, malta.... an excellent collection...really value for money...unfortunately GSI does not offer this...
