What are your opinions on guitars made by Greg Byers? Do you think they are worth the current price of $7500? I am deciding between one of his guitars, or going for a less pricey alternative such as a Vicente Carillo guitar, or possibly a Kohno. I am a semi-professional unwealthy graduate student in need of a concert instrument that will last me a long time. Thanks!

I had a 1990 Byers (I bought it used) I sold recently to a student in Seattle. I already regret selling it.

My guitar was played 6 hours a day for years & was performed on extensively. It never once required adjustment of any kind, except when it was re-fretted.

The build quality is unsurpassed, the setup & ease of play is first rate and the guitar is built for the long haul.

I was in Greg's shop summer before last and played a just-completed spruce guitar he had just completed. It was devine, the sound being well developed beyond my '90.

You need to decide what sound you're after. With Byers you get a big focused sound, concertworthy projection, intense trebles, big but crisp basses, and great separation of notes. It is NOT your typical romantic spanish sound, though it will do that if you coax it out with your technique.

Personally I think his guitars are worth it. I hope to save for one...someday. Have you considered a used one? There are a few out there.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but in the Carillo price range, you should take a look at a brand new product from Spain called Antonio Loriente. I think it's a remarkable guitar in the $3500 - $4000 price range with Brazilian rosewood, spruce or cedar top. I played two last week and was amazed!

About Greg Byers guitars, we have sold many of these over the years and they are excellent instruments. Sound is not very "Spanish" but clear and precise...
