Hi everybody,

I am an avid guitar player esp classical guitar (been playing for 3 years now) and also a big fan of fine guitars although i haven't had the opportunity to own any top of the line models yet (financial reasons !!! :( ).So far i have owned a Rodriguez B1s and currently own a Manuel Reyes Estudio flamenco guitar (a student model).

Ok my question is......most of the fine guitar concert guitars...Ramirez,Reyes,Smallman,Fleta,Kohno...the ir prices almost always increase in years to come, the older it its..the higher the price. So i was just wondering.....would the case be the same for student models from a famed luthier???...in my case....my Manuel Reyes??

just out of interest  ...hehe...i bought my Manuel Reyes while in Cordoba,Spain.I accidently found his shop/factory...went in and came out with a guitar...of course i met both Manuel Reyes and Manuel Reyes jr and even took a picture with them....huh...what a day!!!!!! :D

Although only a student guitar....hmm....it feels as flamenco as a flamenco guitar could get.....brighter,crispier and more powerful each day i play it.

Well, well . . .

I bought a flamenco guitar from Manuel Reyes too. I wasn't that impressed by the guitars I saw . . . lumps of glue here and there. I believe these were made by his son. This was in March 2000.

He did pull out a guitar that had more depth than the flamenco guitars I had been shown. If you ever pick up the Eyewitness travel guide Seville & Andulsia you will find Manuel Reyes Maldonado on page 225 with a guitar that looks like mine.

It had a label that began with A but I asked him to put a label with his name over it which he did. He told me the guitar was solo uno--only one. I didn't ask why. Maybe it is the only guitarras de estudio he made?

I suppose these guitars could increase in value but they are made by his son. I paid 106,000 pesetas for mine.

I bought mine last summer (June 2003)...so its actually pretty recent.Mine have a simple label with his name on it but its not the elaborate and nice kind of label which you get in his concert guitars.
The one that i bought seems to be very well done to me (and i am very very particular about how my guitar looks)...nice finish and stuff.
Bought mine for €400 ++.

the reason why the reyes (jr.) estudios do not approach the reyes (jr.) and especially the reyes (sr.) guitars is that they, the estudios, are built in a factory (probably valencia) to the specifications of reyes (jr.). most estudios are created in this manner. many of the lower end lines of guitars that do not say estudio are actually built elsewhere, again, to the specifications of the company.

this in itself is not bad--an estudio is an estudio. unless there is a spectacular story attached to an estudio, you will probably not see an increase in value.

I told Manuel that I had a Rameriz 1A and then he told me how much his top of the line guitar was:
10,000,000 pesetas.

Hi all,

Just to clarify - the Estudio guitars found in the Reyes shop are NOT made by Manuel Jr. himself. They are outsourced to their specifications, as Keith mentioned. Manuel Reyes Jr. makes only very, very fine concert guitars, like his father.

Cheers,
Dave

Rationbook (I think) wrote,

"I told Manuel that I had a Ramirez 1A and then he told me how much his top of the line guitar was: 10,000,000 pesetas."

When I was studying in Sevilla, a classmate of mine who had made some inquiries with the Reyes shop said that the guitars built by Manuel (Sr. or Jr. I can't remember) cost "a partir de un millon"--meaning they started at a million pesetas, which at that time was around US $7000. The year probably was 2002.

I bought a Ramirez R4 brand new at a Guitar Center in Texas in 2002 for $1200. Today the retail is around $3200 +/- and sell new for the $2500 range, so I'm getting ready to sell mine (just won't keep up with my 1a) and am trying to figure a reasonable asking price for it. It's spotless so it shouldn't sell for much less than I paid, if not a little more.

Hmmm...Is this really true? In the short term, anyway? Should I really expect to pay less for new Ramirez 1a than for one that is 5 or 10-years old?

I've often seen members of this forum advise buyers to at least consider a used guitar in good condition, because they will pay less and get a guitar that's already been "played in". True or no?

I always thought that guitars don't start to appreciate in value until they become "vintage" -- several decades old at least. And then, it's only the ones made by highly recognizable names that really gain in value.

Is that the case? Or have I been sadly deluded all of these years?

Pepe, are you bored? Bumping a thread that's over two years old? :)

Slim, IMO, older doesn't mean it will command a higher price. Now if you got a Smallman before he was well known, you'd probably get a better price than what it originally cost.

But I think most guitars tend to depreciate over time. The guitar is actually a more delicate instrument than, say a violin, and over time they tend to suffer.
