Thanks to our good friend sseow, I have had the oppurtunity to watch a fantastic young girl perform many pieces of music thoroughly and beautifully (including Koyunbaba, Caprice, Venezualan Vals) but the most interesting has to be her interpretation of Prelude.
http://melos.cau.ac.kr/zboard/view.php?id=data_video&page=2&category=&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&keyword=&select_arrange=headnum&desc=asc&no=64
As you can see in this clip, she is very talented.
I am interested because my arrangment, and all recordings I have heard of this piece, does not have a bassline as complicated as this. I downloaded my score for this lovely piece through eythorosson . com and I have taylored (so-to-speak) this arrangemnt to my own, but is no where near as difficult as this. What/Whose arrangement do you guys play? Have yu heard anything like this?
Tell me what you think of this clip and her playing!
Thanks,
sseow

i have the full collection of 6 VCD she plays in a master class with professor chen zhi of china....the VCD set comes with complete full scores... of course with this Bach prelude...
there is no mention of who transcribe it but i have the one from eythorosson also.... on way can match this arrangement from china... the eythorosson is much more easy to play.
i'm actually trying to play this piece using the best of both these scores i have...

The more complete harmonization is not, as you might guess, the work of Bach. Remember, this is for solo cello. Most of the arrangements you'll hear supply basses bases on the implied counterpoint. But then there are a few arrangements that elaborately harmonize the piece, beyond what is "true" to Bach's music. The one that springs to mind is the Duarte. I think I rememebr there is a Ponce version that is even more roccoco...

Greetings friends,
This young lady truly is amazing; I’d really like more information about her.
If I’m not mistaking it sounds like the same transcription that Segovia and Parkening use.

this young lady, li jie, is from china...in the 6 VCD master class, she also plays many peices by barrios, tarrega... and the best is the famous rondo ( and quite difficult piece, as claimed by julian bream openly) by aguado...
i really enjoyed this 6 VCD set with her teacher professor chen zhi analysis the details of each pieces and show the common mistake tat people make... :?
mark, u are probably right as i compare this score i have here which li jie plays, with the segovia's recording i have, and it sounds alike.... but as i said, this arrangement is a bit challenging.... anyone interested i can scan u guys a copy :D

sseow,
I would be most interested and grateful for any information you can provide me.
I would certainly be interested in a copy of this transcription, the version I play is more true to the original Bach version although I do drop my sixth string down to a 'D' so I can alternate parts of the bass line in octaves.
May I recommend to anyone interested; Stanley Yates has a book with the full transcriptions of the six Bach Cello Suites that are very close approximations to Bach's originals. His book includes comparison scores placing the cello score beside his guitar transcriptions (Measure by measure), so one can see any deviation in his arrangements. But as I earlier stated he attempts to be as faithful as possible to the original as Bach had penned it. The book also contains a critical analysis of the various movements of the suites with some alternate fingerings and other very insightful information I found most useful when I studied the cello suites.
I have always been interested in this arrangement because it is further testament how multidimensional the guitar is as a solo instrument.
Sseow, if you could forward me any information as to how to obtain a copy of this arrangement or the videos I would be most thankful. My e-mail address is; classicalmark@mac.com

To Edward Cavanaugh: Edward, didn't
Segovia play that exact same arrangement on his older Bach recordings? I personally use a direct transcription from the cello score itself to play from (I play a Ramirez 10-string), so I think the bass line is a little too busy, and unnecessary.
What's your opinion on this?

Bob: The "problem" is that the video is playing faster than your download speed. When this happens, it stops playing to download the next portion of the video. The entire video is not entirely downloaded before it starts to play. This is normal. Try this:
Click on the video link (posted in the 1st message of this thread)
When the video starts, go practice your guitar for 5 minutes, 5 hours or the rest of the day. The actual time depends on your download speed.
Check back once in a while to see of the video has reached the end. If it is, simply click the PLAY button and the entire video will replay only this time it will do so without interuption.
BTW: The entire video is now on your hard drive. Where? Well, that's for another day.. :)

Has anybody mentioned that this Bach prelude was adapted by M Ponce? It is not really a transcription, as no credible transcriber would add contrapuntal lines . . . :) . . . On the other hand, established composers 'enhancing' music is allowed.
Her playing is awesome. At the risk of being annoying, sseow, can you send the details for the VCD to guitarjoey78229@yahoo.com?

Bach Cello Prelude
This girl has a beautiful sound and technique. But the Prelude transcription is horrible! This is the Parkening transcription, and you can hear him play it on the "Parkening Plays Bach" CD. This is not just an added bass line, but the entire musical phrasing has been re-written. There is nothing wrong with adding a base line to cello music, as it would sound thin on the guitar otherwise. But this transcription is totally self indulgent, and changes the whole essence of the piece. Sometimes less is more - IMHO
Hi SSEOW,
I'm new here but cannot resist your generosity. Could you also please send me the transcsiption and the vcd? My email: raydyl@sahmnet.ae

You're right - it was Ponce.... It can be heard on the "Artistry of Christopher Parkening" CD, not "Parkening Plays Bach", as I thought. I still think the transcription ruins the piece. Sorry.......

That certainly is your prerogative, but I think it sounds rather nice. Bach himself did this when adapting a piece to a new instrument that was significantly more capable then the original. And Ponce has definitely proven himself as a composer. I think a lot of these pieces were actually commissioned by Segovia and handled rather informally which explains the confusion surrounding the authorship of many pieces - like this one and the Weiss/Ponce Prelude Gigue.

In Christopher Parkening's second instructional volume he presents a very nice version of this prelude that is not as laden with modernizations as the one you're asking for, even though he plays the Ponce re-work in his recording. I like it very much and find it captures the essence of the work. The method is readily available in music stores or online and has a lot of other interesting material as well.

Hi all,
I know you guys are interested with the 6VCD + Score.
The deal I had with other was very simple.... the cost of duplicating the 6VCD + scores (binding) will cost US$ 40. Together with the shipping to US, the total cost is US$ 50.
You can either send me a bankdraft of this amount or offer me or direct transfer of money to my bank account.... I have shipped many copies so far to our folks on GSI forum
let me know how it goes...

this new DVD is by the Japanese girl who plays the Dynes's Tango on GSI forum....this new DVD by her is amazing... very nice quality.
I can get this for only US$ 19.00. The only different is that the text on the packaging box is in Chinese. The rest look exactly identical as this one you see on the web site.
Anyone interested please let me know.
LIMITED STOCK...
C'mon, sseow, at the risk of sounding prudish, this approach seems a little like a good attempt at running a small business. I have certainly never spent ten bucks to reproduce ANY CD. Even a good DVD is less than a buck. I suggest you make the VCDs available via FTP or some other process. Many of us have high speed Internet connections and would have little problem downloading these, admittedly, lovely videos. How about it? We can make our own CDs. I believe the spirit of this board is about sharing things we find that are little treasures not everyone would have found in the normal course of things.

Goodness! I certainly never expected any free lunch of the type you have surmised. I am saying that you can avoid the reproduction altogether by simply making the VCDs, the contents of which may easily be copied to your or another hard drive in, say, six folders, one for each, and perhaps a seventh for the scores (which I assume you've already scanned and have those files already saved on your computer) available for download via an FTP Server --Bulletproof works fine, for example--which is easily set up. That way the entire cost you speak of is totally negated. You can control your uploads with a password and any other criteria you deem appropriate. The twenty or so people who wish these files may then create their own CDs from the resultant downloads which may be compressed in .rar or other format and print out the scores the same way. Just think about it.
I am sure you are of good heart and no disrespect was intended in my remarks. Since the production of these CDs seems to be the only financial concern you have in this matter and seem also happy to share the things, I believe this to be a good solution. If, for example, I were to purchase them on the level that you describe, I would certainly make them available to the board members at no charge by the very method I describe above. If this seems of value to you and you would request some help in setting this up, please don't hesitate to ask help of me.

Well, sseow, I'm an old man myself, sixty years old.
I have certainly done nothing here that I would deem unethical. The e-mail was sent to me and subsequently may be interpreted as my property. If you have been embarrassed about it, it does nothing but speak for itself.
But it's clear that I've made you upset and for that I apologize sincerely. It's clear also that my suggestions both for making the VCDs available for download as well as accepting any help from this reasonably well-versed techie in setting up an FTP server (and completely avoiding the reproduction and other costs as well as the having to run to the post office) is not to your liking and won't be persued. The VCDs seem full of promise and I am sure no one will be deterred from buying them by my posts.
In fact, I will purchase them from you myself and put them up for availability on my own FTP server. I hope this eases your burden and your problems with logistics.

let me make this absolutly clear....i'm not in the business of duplicating and selling CD... some of the forum members here know what i m doing 4 living n it will b a shame if i use this 2 make money.

i m only doing this as a favour. but i m upset because people take my generosity 2 share on negative motivation. don tell me u never make copy of cd music or video cd 4 your friends???? :? so wat r the cd writer for ???
go n ask how many of them have received music score they wanted n i scan n send them...? is that 4 profit..? this is crazy... at the end of the day, the forum like this was created 4 a good cause 2 get our network 2 share information...at the end of the day, i don want 2 disappoint someone who have seen part of the video n desire 2 c the entire 6 vcd. i can understand how they feel n that's why i help them.

Sseow,
I think it's safe to say that most everyone who subscribes to this forum either has a CD burner or understands the use of such things. Many also are able to create CDs from downloaded files found on the Internet at FTP sites or programs given to them by friends. Additionally, many of us have made CDs for our friends. I certainly have. The only stipulation that I have ever made in this, and not always, is the simple exchange of a blank CD for my work. I realize that you live in Singapore and, while I don't know the exchange rate off the top of my head, asking between six and seven dollars American for each of the six VCDs plus shipping (I agree that that expense is certainly justified) coupled with the tone of your e-mail and your unwillingness to simply provide the things for download leaves you open to a little skepticism as to your intentions of true sharing. I might also remind the other members who have obtained them that they too might consider placing them up for download from an FTP server. Going to the trouble of reproducing them on CDs for purchase or whatever you wish to call it in these days of high tech transfers and state of the art hardware seems a little out of date to me. You seem to have ignored everything in my posts except those things which insulted you. I suggest I have offered and explained my viewpoint on this so that it should be most clear to anyone who reads it and I will henceforth leave it as it lies. I, like you, am an old man. I have played the guitar for forty odd years and love it beyond description. I fell in love, as many of us have, with this lovely Chinese girl who plays so well and exhibits an exceedingly gentle charm and charisma while she performs. I want to make her name available to all my guitar playing friends and enjoy watching her growth and reputation as it continues.
I think I've gone as far with you on this subject as is necessary. Have it your way. I will say no more about it.
If I may still purchase the VCDs after this exchange, please e-mail me your address and I will send you the money in bank draft or certified check. The prospect of the VCDs in their entirety remains that inviting.
Thanks so much! villanesque@sbcglobal.net

Aha! The merchant has revealed himself. He knows the minute I get my hands on those VCDs I will put them up for free downloads on my FTP server and he'll be out his fifty buck gratuity per each set. I wonder how Li Jie would feel about her work being sold. I doubt that she would mind lovers of the guitar taking a peek at her in the interest of amateur devotion. Does Sseow send her a monthly check for royalties? I wonder. OK. I promised not to rave on so I won't. But I couldn't help but respond inasmuch as I'm the only person on the board to have offered any curiousity about this guy's ethics and he's going to punish everyone for my doubting the wonderful generosity of his offer. If you all feel I've been out of line, please feel free to flame me. I believe the study and pursuit of our instrument also compels us to seek and maintain high standards of nobility and excellence. Any of you who have already purchased these VCDs and would be willing to share them in the true sense of this board are invited to please offer to make them available to us all. I can download them from you and put them up on my FTP server for us all. You're all certainly welcome to any scores (I have a lot) I have free of charge. Sseow, I speak and read a pretty fair Mandarin Chinese as a result of my military service experience and an old proverb occurs to me. "A frog who lives in a well sees only the sky." I suggest you broaden your horizons.

members of the forum,
please don fall into the trap of porzatz.... he cannot get a copy from me now, he is trying 2 avoid paying the air ticket to china 2 get a copy... he is asking u to give him a copy for free so that he can put on his ftp server....u believe??!. ... it is only this way out so he can get some sympathy vote 4 someone to send him a copy.
he is better of be the frog to get out of the well to c the big CHINA himself...
i think he is jealous with the 50 buck i collect for each set of cd, so by asking u guy 2 send him a copy, he can save the 50 buck plus becoming a "hero" in this forum to offer free service...
n if someone is offering free score on the ftp server, make sure he/she is also paying the rolyalty to the publisher, or else, there is another saying in chinese " when u point a finger to someone, 3 of the fingers are pointing back to yourself"

Well, Goodness (again), Sseow,
If you are so enraged at me for my foolishness at doubting your authenticity, why do you insist on shutting down the availability of the VCDs to the other members of the board? I'm the only one here who suggested you might possibly be making some money in the guise of healthy interchange. I am only a member (and a relatively new one at that) and have no power or jurisdiction that could hurt you in any way. Why take your anger at me out on everyone else? If you really want to share these VCDs then the easiest way has been described my me. Why would I wish to do what you describe? I could have kept my mouth shut and simply bought them from you and then put them up for download. Fifty bucks is not that much moola in my world. I even offered it to you. You rejected my request because of your petty anger. OK, hate or despise me as you wish. But make these VCDs available to the board based on your personal sense of honor. Many of the members may find your methods completely acceptable in their codes of conduct. I am not a perfect human being either. If you wish to exclude me, that's between the two of us, but it should not apply to everyone else here. I still want the VCDs and will send you the money at any address you deem appropriate. How's that? Judging by your attitude, however, I feel assured they might get "lost in the mail..."
I'm still willing to take that chance. By the way, it's all right to be a businessman, but in this kind of arena it's important to state it for all to see at the outset, not with some hawking undertone of doing folks a favor. Show us what you're made of.

i m doing the cd duplication as a favour n not as a money making.
since it is a favour, i only do this 4 people i feel comfortable.
if someone simply expose the mail content of others on the forum like this, he does not deserve any respect.
i will not bow down for the 50 bucks ... just forget it...2 prove that i m not making this for money... i issue this offer...
ANYONE IN THE GSI FORUM, EXCEPT SOMEONE WHO I DON RESPECT, JUST SEND ME 6 BLANK CD + PLUS $10 FOR THE POSTAGE, I WILL COPY FOR U FFFFFFRRRRRRRREEEEEEE OF CHARGE....
of course, i cannot come out from my own pocket to go to the shop... i will do this at my leisure with my own PC and cd burner ....so i cannot promise the turnaround....if u r patient enough, this is the deal.

We have a saying in this country that one shouldn't do anything he wouldn't want to see reported in the newspapers the next day. It's a pretty good guideline for one's conduct. Still, I agree with you that my posting the contents of your e-mail to me was pushing the envelope of propriety a bit. I just felt it important to the point I wished to make. In your culture, losing face may be of a primal importance unknown to ours. We simply regard such things as a sort of "wake-up call" to learn from and grow in our experience; this as a result of our curious Western ironic sense of humor about ourselves. If you were my friend I would exhaust every option to protect you from foolishness and dishonor by others. I would not expect any reward or acknowledgement from you about this nor expect you to understand my motives. Since you have clearly learned something from our exchanges, I honor who you are and appreciate that you have reversed your stand about sharing with the other members of the board. I am convinced more than ever that you are a good man and without frivolous intention. Thanks for what you have offered.

this is so stupid
as a senior member of this forum site i feel i have to say something:
This forum is about the classical and flamenco guitar. It is a great forum. Members like sseow who contribute so much to this forum (not only intellectually, but generously in the form of reproduction - which we all appreicate) should be embraced and welcomed.
Enough of this pointless dribble. Its a big shame, but its time to close this post that I have started down.
