Greetings Bob,
The benefits of using a metronome cannot be understated. I would highly recommend that you purchase one and incorporate it into your practicing ASAP.
The little quartz units are fairly inexpensive and they’re available almost everywhere. I keep one in my case for when I’m away from home. When I’m at home usually I’ll use my old wind up pendulum style. You don’t really see these around as much these days, I guess because the price, accuracy and portability of the quartz units make them a more logical choice.

Hey Bob!!

I feel that the metronome is one of the best tools for practice. It will help you develop a great sense of timing and control. I first started using the metronome while playing the piano and had one of those pendulum wind up ones that Mark was talking about. When I moved on to guitar, I bought myself one of the quartz metronomes that are inexpensive and portable. I've had that thing for about 15 years now and it won't die. I love it. (The battery is being held in by duct tape) I practice scales and warm up exercises with it about 4 times a week. I play classical, and more recently started getting into flamenco, but I also played in rock bands. One of the most gratifiying complements that a drummer ever gave me is that even if he was lost in the song that we were playing, he could depend on my timing to always be right on. And, if you start doing things that have odd times and strange rhythms, the practice that you had with your little metronome will serve you well and create a solid sense of timing.
