I copied and paste this from http://www.lacetoleather.com/wondrugpag4.html

NAIL PROBLEMS:
Brittle, cracking, fragile and thin nails are a sign of some deficiency and faulty metabolism in the body. Cider vinegar has been known to remedy this particular complaint, with the results of healthy, strong nails. Also any white spots which were present on the nails previously will be eliminated. Dosage being: two teaspoons in a glassful of water three times a day.

Are there any apple cider vinegar for sale at GSI ? :) :o :D

You're supposed to DRINK the vinegar?

think of this: lettuce is basically water. salad dressing is part vinegar. so 3 salads a day will keep the doctor away.

vinegar really works well cleaning glass. makes sense that it would help your eyesite--sort of like spring cleaning for your eyeballs.

Cider vinegrette YUM that souds good. But if your not in to that I use a nail hardening cream on my 4 fingers( apply 3 to 5 times a day) and fiberglass mesh wrap on my thumb ( when it pops off just glue it back on). It seems to work really well.

Biotin may work well for you. They sell biotin supplements at local pharmacy and convenient stores. It takes a while for it to start working (about 2-3 months), but you notice the difference in the thickness and strength of your nail. Check it out on a search engine. There's even a product out there called "Hard Nails" (which I hav NOT tried yet).

there is a product on the market which you can buy at any drug store, etc. called NO MORE WRAPS. it is an epoxy based solution that has powdered kevlar (of the bullet proof flax jacket fame) in it. there is no formeldehyde (great for embalming folks but brutal on nails).

the advantages of both materials is strength and flexibility. when kevlar is laminated to a stiffer material (in this case your nail) the laminate is not only strong, but is flexible. the ability to flex is important to absorb shock when under stress (an impact, striking a bass string, etc.). a stiff laminate (say nail and top coat polish or fiberglass wraps) is brittle and will be likely to crack under stress.

i have used this solution for several years now. it works! one coat usually does the trick. takes one minute to apply and a few minutes to dry and comes off easily with acetone. and, for us guys, there is an extra advantage--it has a flat rather than glossy sheen--keeps the stares/comments about one's nails to a minimum.

Keith,
Your informative post is the reason I like to keep in touch with other guitarists via forums such as this. I really appreciated reading about your success using the product No More Wraps. My biggest gripe regarding all those special nail hardeners on the market are the glossy finishes that, as you say, attract all sorts of unwanted attention. I've been looking for a nail strengthening product for some time that had a flat finish and it sounds like No More Wraps fits my needs perfectly. I'll give it a try. Thanks for a great tip!

glad i could be of help. i have not tested whether my fingernails are bullet proof--maybe someone could do that research.

by the way: my knowledge of composites (fiberglass, kevlar, epoxy, etc.) comes from my many years as a whitewater squirt boater and slalom racer where the boats of choice are composites and, as such, repairs are needed, etc.

Has anyone heard of cutting a garlic clove and rubbing it on your nails to help strengthen them? I heard this from one other guitarist. But I am not sure if it is true or not. If anyone knows of a natural way to strengthen your nail without using chemicals, let me know.

Thanks,
Michael

"HARD AS HOOF" nail cream is basicly just vitamins, and nutrients. Just rub it on 3 to 5 times a day. It's what I use (except on my thumb) and it works great. Never heard of useing garlic, but I love eating it.

Hi. I usually only read the posts here but I thought I'd suggest something to those of you with nail problems. I use it and it works great. http://www.keratex.net/hoof_hardener.htm

jetiii--if you live in the u.s.a, go to walgreens, osco, or any other national or local chain. it should be there. if not, you can go on line an buy it ($3.49 a bottle). just type in "no more wraps" and you will find several sources--even america express sells it on line. weird eh?

I have been using something called "Nutra Nail" Growth formula w/ Aloe. Got it at the drug store for $4. It paints on, is not detectable when it dries and seems to really have added strength, but in a flexable, natural way (although I haver not noticed ANY difference in growth rate). I have noticed that I am able to get a little more volume out of the guitar, and have not had any problems with nail breaking since I started using it. Takes about 5 days to feel a difference.
