View Full Version : String Wear

My new guitar has worn the outer core of the basses again, took about 2 hours for the A & D strings to fracture their windings.

I noted this is the case on my other guitars which are due string changes.

Is it normal for the outer windings to wear?

The frets on the Sanchis are pretty prominent, like many guitars I tried. My teacher thinks maybe I press too hard or swivel about on the strings, but they seem to be wearing all over the place.

I wonder if this is normal, whether to just leave it to settle or whether to have all the frets done?

The guitar still sounds great.

What tension strings are you using? Which frets seem to be causing the wear.

Two hours of playing shouldn't be producing that kind of wear.

D'Addario Pro Arte medium, previously La Bella & Hannabach flamenco,
looks like I'll need to take it back for attention.

Hi, Compagnito:

If I were you, I'd be tempted to have a competant repairman re-crown the frets. It sure sounds like they aren't as smooth as they should be.

Recently, I had my Ramirez concert 10-string rebuilt. The 1973 frets were very inaccurate, so I had the fingerboard and frets replaced. Ramirez uses a computer print nowadays, and the firm delivered my requested accuracy in spades, this guitar plays better in-tune than any I've ever played. And the frets are smooth as silk, no problems hearing them when I use a vertical vibrato!

All my best,
Mischa

Yeh it is a mystery, I wonder if I am playing incorrectly, pressing too hard or something, I 've only started learning flamenco with a teacher this year - up to then I just taught my self, dunno.

Thanks for the advice. The guy I bought it off is UK distributor & was also recomended by Juan Martin's office, it's just that they don't have an on-site guitar technician - too much overhead I guess, but they guy who owns the business is pretty competent.

I'll see what he says tomorrow.

Thanks guys.
