Hi,
I've been teaching myself to play classical guitar using Noad's, Parkening's, and Shearer's method books, and I've run across a problem that I hope someone here can answer.

Question: When playing two note chords, what is the correct way to play?

I ask, because from what I'm seeing, it appears to be subjective. Sometimes p,i; sometimes i,m; sometimes p,a; etc. for the same chord.

Should I always use thumb for bass-fingers for trebble? a on 1 string, m on 2 string, i on 3 string?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Ted

It is indeed subjective, at least for the most part. Thumb for the basses, fingers for the trebles is usually a good rule of thumb though(no pun intended  ).
It also depends highly on context, i.e. what the notes before and after the "chord" require. If that's not an issue, then proximity of the two strings usually will decide R.H. fingering. For example, use P,I if they're adjacent strings.
Above all, use what feels best and helps you produce the best sound.
Hope that helps and good luck.
Dave

Dave, thanks for answering. It's encouraging to know that I'm doing the right thing; especially when learning solely by book(s).

Sincerely,

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but let me speak as a largely self-taught player: see if you can find a good teacher. After all my years of self teaching I finally took 4 years of lessons with a fine teacher. It was almost too late, my bad habits were so deeply ingrained. It will be the best guitar money you ever spent. And you don't have to go on for 4 years. Even 6 months can do lots for you...

TheEvan, of course you're right, and eventually, I hope to do this. For now however, finances dictate otherwise.
Thanks,
Ted
