View Full Version : Low Humidity... How Long?

Current outside temperature is -30C.... My poor humidifier is running full blast but can not keep the room at an optimal humidity of 50%. In fact, keeping it at 40% is about the best it can do. Until today, the humidity in the room was quite consistent at 49-50%
My question is, how long can a guitar stay (on a guitar stand) in a room where the humidity is averaging 38% before there is a risk of damage? Are we talking hours or days?

Depends on the guitar. For an all-solid wood (especially a Flamenco), you're probably running a risk if you go much longer than a day or so.
Laminated guitars are much more durable.
It can't hurt to MacGyver something to get you through. Even a bowl of water under the guitar, or a damp sponge in a ziplock inside the guitar.
Good luck,
Dave

dude, -22F yikes! i live in boston where it gets cold, but not that cold. last year it go to zero and what i did to keep up the humidity was to:
1. run a room humidifier
2. use an in-case humidifier (a dish of water if the case is flat also works)
3. if you have stand up registers, dry clothes on them
4. mop your floors a lot
5. long hot showers--the steam helps.

Must be getting some of that warm air flowing up from Boston :D
