View Full Version : Filling screwholes
I'm going to be installing new tuning machines this week-end. I've already tried the new tuners for fit, and they drop right in. Two of the four holes on new machines align with the existing screw holes in the headstock. The other two will need new holes drilled but are close and may overlap the old holes. Whats the best way to fill the old holes before re-drilling to ensure 100% screw grip strength if there is overlap? I intend to drill out the old holes and glue a tiny dutchman in each. I have lots of wood scraps I could whittle teensy dowels from, but nothing that's close to Spanish cedar. Its not a big deal but I want to do it right.

The type (by this I mean color) of wood you use is not important if the filled holes will not be visible, but if you wish to put screws in very close to the original holes, then it is best if you use sonething that is around the same density as the neck wood. If you put in a really hard wood the screws or drill may just be deflected and go in at an angle. Same deal with something too soft.
Mahogany is a little to hard usually, WRC is too soft, Rosewoods are too hard, a bit of spruce would work Ok. I am not sure what you have in your box of tricks, but I am sure you will find something Ok.
