Most of you read music others read tablature. My question is :
Has your knowledge of classical study been a help or a hinderance when playing other genres i.e. Jazz, Blues, Rock, etc.? Just curious.

I read both but prefer notes over tab. I think is an advantage to know both as it makes you more flexible when playing different styles.

notes for me (i can read tab, it's not that hard). lute music is only in tab till someone changes it.
reading notes is just better/usefull.
i only play classical guitar.
i do(sometimes) scream w/ a rock n roll band-when they aren't afraid
of me. but that doesn't answer your question.sorry

It's definitely an advantage to read tab but I too prefer written notation probably because I learned to read first. Sometimes if I'm learning new material it takes me a little longer to read tablature.
Brian you're too much! I found that a classical background has helped me immensely when it comes to Jazz and the corresponding chord progressions. Players who read tab and then try to learn notation find it difficult.
So you two players are real classical purists! Did you ever consider Chamber Music?

Katie,
i don't work well with others.
hence the invitations for me to join/leave the band.
it's a cycle that goes something like: the band;"damn we gotta get
brian back, he can really let it rip!' brian;'ok'--few months later---
band;'damn we gotta get rid of brian, he just lets it rip!' brian;'ok'
that's pretty much the refrain every 6 months.
i tried working with a flute player in school-the music got on my nerves
and wanted to rap my fellow muscian over the head with their flute.
i liked working with a friend doing music for voice and guitar but, we would
just wind up trashed
i'm just better off in my bunker going at my speed and my rep.
and accepting gigs for the enjoyment.

That's perfectly fine. Getting a long with other musicians who are heady and full of themselves can be annoying and aggrevating to say the least. That's one of the reasons you don't see the bands of today sticking around all that long. One guy/girl always wants to be the star.
I've played with many different musicians in my early years they were a good deal older than I was and I learned quite a bit. Today I can take or leave the band/group scene. Although it is nice to play with others from time to time.

No, my classical style has not been a hinderance.
Clasaical study to me has all been about a single thing: fingerstyle technique.
Actually, I really do not care for "classical" music, but love to play classical style. I much prefer Jazz, Flamenco and even some Chet Atkins type music.
My classical training has served me well in playing the music that I want to play. I consider it one of the most versitile technical styles available to guitar.

I feel the same way. I'm not knocking classicalthere's tons of great compositions to learn but exploring other genres is very interesting it also adds to your overall sound palette.
BTW the avantar of your guitar - what make is it? Is that a lacewood back? I curious. It's really beautiful!

i feel classical technique makes the guitar. music made just to sound good is less interesting/deep
i can't be alone in feeling envy over the plectrum player's eased popularity:
me, a drummer, and electric guitarist got together for a battle of bands. three days later was the contest, we placed. my and the elec. guitarist both attempted our speed demon tactics during our solos; i thought we matched up (thanks to the universal character of classical technique). maybe its because the guy was better looking, but he recieved praise. "hey your the nylon guy....yep.....alright."
my strictness to tarrega technique is somewhat a sweet lemon, its how i'll be best.
the farthest i'll stray (while i am solidifying my hands) is FrIday night in S.F. trio stuff (deLucia, DiMeola, McG) for some scale work-granted, not full speed.
a thought or two,
