any tips on a good flight case
in the $300 range?
small enough to convince the airlines to let me carry it
on board but, strong enough to check it and not worry.
i have a mark leaf case
but, it's like carrying my t.v. around.

Before 9/11, you would not say anything to anyone and just walk up to the gate with your hard shell and stash it in the overhead. I did it that way time and time again. Now, who knows. You have to submit to background checks, protological exams and cat scans before they let you on a plane these days. And if a case is small enough to convince them to let you carry it on, it may not be big enough to hold a guitar, which kind of defeats the whole purpose.
I say, leave the fleta home and bring a beater up to the gate, and if they hassle you, do a gate check on it and enjoy the flight.

post 9/11 i didn't seem to have problems, I would fly from JFK to San Francisco twice a year. I flew American. No one even questioned me. I just brought my Chris Carrington in my Pro-Tec case (which is a big one - I really was taking a risk because its not a hard case and if i was denied i'd have some problems....) I always got it on board and the Pro-Tec case fit precisely in one overhead compartment of pretty much any plane.
certain planes though DO have that micro vertical bin, but most have those horizontal bins that do fit a case.
The key is getting on board, and getting on board early with the case. If you can do that you're home free because, well, you're in the cabin, and there's space.

That's why something like a SoloEtte is ideal when you travel. You don't ever have to worry about checking it or lugging around something heavy.
GSI carries a relatively inexpensive version *here* (http://www.guitarsalon.com/store.php?it=GUCLARI-03456&template_id=gsi_site_a.tpl&render_it=SPEC&searched=YES&spot=img_1&product_cat=CL&product_subcat=all&search_string=&render_type=&order_by=description_short).

I bought a Calton case ($650!!), but American Airlines allowed me to put it in the overhead bin, so the standard case would have been fine. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

nylon6,
some airlines have let me take the mark leaf
as carry on.-what a scene, banging into everything and everyone 8)
i've been sometimes tempted to bring a normal case and the leaf.
ask to board with the normal case and check the leaf.
if they say no, put the babe in the leaf and check both.(insure the
standard case for $2k  )
anyone ever use an ameritage case?

If its a big enough flight, (LA to Houston like the one I took) you can put it overhead if not they'll be glad to jam it underneath. Depends on how big the plane is. And they'll let to board early to find a place for it. Walk in with the first class people and bang their heads with the case on the way back.

usually to switzerland/germany-the plane's the
big momma. seems like it depends on the person
at the gate. had one snot tell me, "oh no, no, no,
you wont be taking that onboard" had a princess that said,
"sure pal take it-i'd hate to see you at the gig w/ a busted guitar"
got bumped to first class a few times-boy they didn't
know what to do with the likes of me! "what do you
mean i drank all the vodka on the plane?" we're terribly
sorry sir  "that's o.k., you still have tequilla dont you?"
"why yes sir!"----"either way it doesn't matter, i've got
my duty free stashed next to my guitar in the steerage section"
