I'm curious to know how many of you play pieces that you haven't heard before. I'm working on Ballet & Allegretto by Manuel Ponce, and I wonder if my interpretation of the score is in any way comparable to the way it was intended. Segovia is sometimes criticized for his renditions of Bach pieces. Of course Ponce is a little different since it was likely recorded by Segovia the way it was intended. I would imagine that way some pieces are played today, from the Renaissance, Baroque, and older periods, are somewhat changed from their original intentions. Like a story handed down for generations some peices have no obtainable orignal manuscript. And, since written score has its limitations, accents, rhythm, and timbre get lost or changed along the way. As a bit of an experiment for myself, I'm going to try and get this piece down as I understand it, then listen to Segovia's recording and how it compares. I suppose that is what makes GC so intriguing. You get to interpret it in a way that sounds good to you.
