I made a little video after being asked
about changing from long to short nails.

If you're sort of in the dark about nails,
maybe this will help you.

It may not, who knows. Just some random comments
about my personal thoughts and approach.

I use M and A for freestroke so those are the fingers
shown, in that order.
I use a machinist ruler to demonstrate the string
plain across M.
You can also see what acrylics look like, if you've
never seen them. They look a little funky.

nice demo TK!............i must say that i also prefer the shorter nail myself.........but it is still nail non-the-less...........
Pumpin' Nylon is where i first got it!
But once i was sitting RIGHT in front of Manolo Sanlucar, and noticed that he had fairly short nails also...................that'zzzz what REALLY got me into the idea. ..............................,at least everyone should try it once before they dismiss it......

I am with all of you on the shorter nails. Have been gradually cutting down on the length. Has improved just about every aspect of my playing. This past week I had allowed the nails to get a bit too long and was having some inconstistency with tone, doing tremolo. Went to the file and the problem disappeared.

When I purchased the Gerardo Nunez DVD, I was shocked and surprised at the very short nails he uses.

I use a file to shape, then an emory board to smooth and I usually use #500 3M paper to smooth the edges.

Todd,

Thanks for the close up look at your nails.

Thanks, Todd!

That was very useful. I´m going for short nails after many, many years of long-nail playing.

Todd,

I get a "page not found" error message. I was hoping to see your video.

I've heard from a former teacher that flamenco players tend to keep shorter nails. Rasqueado tears up my nails, especially when they get too long. Picado (rest stroke) scale passages don't require long nails so much as accurate & synchronized L/R hands.........

The one exception might be for the thumb, it sure helps to have a beast on there for alzapua and other thumb based strums.....
