Hi Bob2,
You can either edit your profile or email me your request, or simply just re-register under the new name.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Dave
I would like to ask a specific member a question. How can I do that?

Start a new thread with specific member's name as the subject. Ask what you need to ask in the message body and hope they (the member) are looking in to see your question. Oh yeah, the rest of us might eves drop on your conversation so watch out!

I've wanted to ask the GSI forum staff if they could upgrade their php bbs software to include private messaging (otherwise knwon as PMing on other web forums). The process of having to start a topic just to ask a person something is kind of hit or miss and cumbersome, and of course one may want privacy.
any possibility?

Most bulletin board software has private messaging built in. I suspect it may have simply been disabled (or never enabled?) here.
I admin a large board that uses vBulletin. We have disabled certain features to conserve resources and put less strain on the servers/database, as some features require multiple DB queries per page load. Truth be told, most of our woes stem from the fact that the mysql DB was never meant to handle the load we get, so the issue comes down to DB crashes, not lack of server hardware.
But I don't see the volume of traffic here as being such that enabling private messages would cause a problem. I'd like to see it implemented as well. :)
this is a good question .................i'm a memeber at alot of other forums that are not guitar related and they all have PM.................i have also wonderd why it isn't here....????
i think it's a nice thing to message others privately...........
what are your thoughts on this Dave, Tim, or anyone else ..........???
Thanks!!!! 8)

Hear Hear!
The commoners have spoken. People are all jazzed up for PMing. I bet there are people here, like Sandra, who could even help the process out if the GSI staff have their hands full with things like...selling guitars and accessories.

I second (or third, or fourth) this suggestion. I think it's a great idea, and yes, it seems to be a feature of a lot of other forums.
BTW, what ever happened to the "new and improved" forum? I remember it was being tested many months ago. There were a lot of gripes, but people always gripe at first when things change. I thought most of the complaints were about the look and the interface. But I think a lot of us were looking forward to the improved functionality that the new design was supposed to bring.

Naw, I already have my hands full with the other forum I mentioned and I don't know the specific software being used here.
In vBulletin, it's a simple matter of ticking a box in the admin control panel to enable private messaging, then setting the limitations as to number of stored PMs allowed and whether or not pop-up and/or email notification is used. I would imagine the software here works similarly.
It's really not rocket science, anyone with admin access could do it. ;)

Cast another vote from me for PM!
Also, can you change your username but keep your profile? I don't think it is possible, you have to nuke the old one and start over is how I see it.

If you keep asking GSI to add more stuff, the prices of all the guitars may end up in INQUIRE! :D

While we're talking about the GSI website, when is the new one coming out? I remember there was even a beta version offered to us for review about six months ago. Whatever happened?

Hey Richard,
Well, truth be told, we weren't too please with that beta version, in terms of both funtionality and appearance. We ended up started starting over with a different company, actually. The look and feel will be more of a "new and improved, V2.0" of the current site, versus an entirely different design.
So, the change of designs delayed us a bit, but it will be up and running this year.
Stay tuned!
Dave
