"I wanted so badly to make it in this country," Charo said in a thick Spanish accent from Los Angeles during a short a break from her tour to shoot a Geico commercial.
OMG! She's entering Esteban territory. Wonder if they'll do a duet?

If you google her you will find she is said to speak 4 languages (including of course spanish but also Japanese, French and English) and studied under Segovia. Maybe there is more to her than meets the eye yi yi.

One of my old teachers studed with Jose Tomas who is (was?) quite the jokester. He liked it when good looking female students wanted to study "under" him...wonder how Segovia felt about having Charo studying "under" him?

I had heard for years that she put on a fantastic show in Vegas centered around her guitar playing. I think she almost always shows at the Aladdin Casino. I was always curious to see her perform.

I grew up in 'Vegas; 'back around '68 or so, Charo & Jose Feliciano were the first nylon string guitarists that I saw in real performances (TV) & they were BOTH fantastic!!

The "puros" scream may bloody murder, but I love both of them, so who cares??!! Charo is en exceptional player/performer----"Coochi! Coochi!" aside, I love her! ;)

She is in no way even remotely akin to the likes of Estebank--other than they both play "nylon string" guitars!

Anyway, I heard her main gig was Hawaii??

Wouldn't Esteban be the Esteban of flamenco - he did study under one of the great flamenco masters - Segovia.

Jubi,

Charo used to live in Hawaii for quite a long time, but recently moved out to Vegas, I believe. Or maybe Cali, can't quite remember.

Forgiven. I actually met the guy - he happened to be playing at an arboretum I went to with my family last year. In real life, he's just as sincere and passionate about music as he is on TV.

you know I saw Charo's picado technique, and it's actually quite good..

I bet she could play some decent traditional stuff in compas.

Mitch

I agree. She actually can play quite nicely. She throws a little show business into her act, but she is talented. I wouldn't compare her to Esteban at all.

You may be partially mistaken, or perhaps I am nowadays...

Charo did not actually play guitar in her concerts - there was another guitarist "backstage" and she was simply "guitar-synching". I know this because I was friends with said guitarists for years.

This may have all changed by now, this was a few years ago. Perhaps she's learned since...

I'm not stating this to offend anyone, for the record, it's just what I know.

I'll be shocked if that's true (I'm easily shocked) - she did some convincing synching if that's what it was...wow. More info please...

Maybe Esteban and Charo should form a duo and take it on the road. 8) That would be a Vegas act I would pay to see. :D

no Charo is the real deal, and can play guitar. I believe 100% that she originally learned flamenco. also, she was born in the south of spain

Why does it matter where she was born? Either way, she may play just dandy nowadays, I don't exactly follow her. I do know however, from firsthand experience, that she wasn't really playing guitar back when I first heard about her, and that's enough for me.

Again, I'm not trying to burst the bubbles of Charo-lovers, I'm just stating fact. Believe what you will.

it doesn't MATTER where she was born per se... it is just that the south of spain happens to be the birthplace of both charo and flamenco. therefore, it makes more sense and seems more probable that she would learn flamenco, rather than if she was born in say, Madagascar

LawrenceYou're flattering yourself...believe "whom" you like, It makes no difference to anyone;

FWIW.."I" don't buy a word of it!

I've "seen" with my own eyes something that I thought was impossible--two different ladies with EXCEPTIONALLY long fingernails---on their fretting hands...playing freestyle accompaniment to their live vocals..

"One" was Charo...

...the "other" was Dolly Parton!

No possibility of any faking! (unless someone was remotely controling the fingers & precisely placing the balls of their fingertips squarely & RAPIDLY at the correct position throughout their performances.....all the while cleanly "missing" those remote-fingernails from "gong-showing" the fretboard..........."NOT" ;) )

Close to 30 years ago...

Both of those gals can stroll around like Mariachis & 'shred their wigs off!

Whatever you do---don't EVER watch a video or live performance of Charo---with all that information there in your head conflicting with what you'll see, it might cause a psychotic reaction!

...just "don't go"!....& keep on believing what you "hear" from your "first hand" sources!

SHEEEEESHHH!!!!!....

...great...so what else?....oh, my! OK...a little pointer for ya'...ready?

If you want to be taken a little more seriously, you can't say she's: "the esteban of flamenco"----ESTEBAN is the ESTEBAN of flamenco...see?

....try it again, you'll get it....just go real slow & think...

I find it worrisome the lack of knowledge that many have exhibited about Charo an established performer, who has made a successful career in the American market for many decades. We are talking decades you geniuses: got that .WHO was married to a master musician from Cuba who made it big in the USA in the fifties in music and hollywood films. She's no spring chicken but she's still a verifiable act that has earned respect through achievement. The idea that some would even compare her with such a caricuture as this esteban turns my stomach.
