I was looking at CG's on Ebay the other day and came upon this guitar. I am wondering, is this the real "Puerta de la Iglesia" (Church Door) by Rodriguez? It appears to have all the specs: French Polish, BRW/SP, early mfg date, old growth BR? But starting at $2,300? The seller doesn't seem to know because if he did I am pretty sure that he would not be selling it that way... (Or maybe it's just my opinion on older Rodriguez guitars)

Just a dumb question but... Your guess is as good as mine.. Just curious..
Might be worth the battle if it is...

Phil

Folio is correct in saying that the term "churchdoor" is associated with the guitars of Miguel Rodriguez of Cordoba. They are made of Brazilian rosewood with varying amounts of light colored sapwood showing. Legend has it that the wood came from the doors of an ancient church that was being demolished, but you know how legends are.

There is a similar Manuel Rodriguez guitar being sold by a dealer with a reputation for rather high prices. It is from 1965, has the same type of bridge but has Indian rosewood back and sides. It also has a couple of repaired top cracks. The asking price is $4000.
Manuel Rodriguez lived and worked in Los Angeles from 1959 until he returned to Spain in 1973. He is still making a few guitars himself (he turns 80 this year) but most of the "Manuel Rodriguez" guitars on the market are from his factory in Esquivias (Toledo) Spain. His sons, Manuel, Jr. and Norman are also luthiers. They have a retail store on C/Hortaleza in Madrid.

Thanks Folio, I was so excited about the possiblity of a Church Door being available on Ebay and not going for much.... I think you actually saved me a couple grand.... Would you like a commision?

So if you were serious about the Fletas I will watch... Don't think that I could even talk about the $'s for one when they are selling for what the market will bear.. Still have to balance the Wife, Kid - (College) house payment and life in general in the SF Bay Area....

It's funny, of all the guitars people have had and or own now not many of Sr's guitars are mentioned on this forum nor go for sale on Ebay... Why is that? The two son's guitars are affordable and Sr's. guitars go for $17-19K for the pro's. Pepe R. swears by them, I saw him at a Guitarrada at SF Conservatory of Music this year and he still had the one he grew up with, he even had a name for it. (Along with another one from his early years.) I really like the sound but not the $'s.. Got to find a comprimise in my price range... I have been talking with Dave Tate about Loriente's.

Many on the forum have mentioned Solistas but I would like to hear a sound bite. Are they Flamenco or Classical? I currently have an Aparacio AA100 SP/IN that is just beginning to open up. I am not sure whether to go to an entry level concert (up to $3,500) or get a good CD/IR top of the student line to match my Aparacio....

Thanks again for the reply.

Phil

LPLIV,
I'm not saying that Pepe Romero doesn't have a Manuel Rodriguez guitar but the Romeros have had a long association with the guitars of the Miguel Rodriguez family of Cordoba, not Manuel Rodriguez.
There is no family connection between the two.

Thanks IW:

Once again I stand corrected.... All this time I thought that his guitar was a Manuel Rodriguez... So I must have heard Manuel when he was actually saying Miguel... Sorry, I thought that he was playing Sr's. guitars...
Learn something new everday.... I thought that the "Church Door" guitar was called that because it was loud enough to fill a church... Anyway they sounded great at the Guitarrada and concert the following nite. Just like Pepe's Guitar Solos CD.

Hey Phil! Glad to see you back here!

I believe you've got your Rodriguez guitars mixed up. The Romero's and MIGUEL Rodriguez (of Cordoba) have a long history. I don't personally know of him ever using a MANUEL Rodriguez guitar, though it's certainly possible.

Pepe does have a 1973 Miguel Rodriguez named "La Wonderful"...perhaps that's the one you saw? He also often played a 1961.

Either way, I have to agree with you - Miguel Rodriguez (Sr. or Jr., actually) is easily one of my all-time favorite makers. Simply breathtaking guitars...

The guitars of Pepe Romero, Jr. are the closest I've ever heard to one, soundwise - go figure!

Cheers,
Dave

EDIT - just saw iberianwolf's post and your follow-up, sorry! Guess it's already been pointed out!

Keep your eye out for a pre-war Fleta on Ebay though, according to 'Miguel Angel' there should be a bunch of them.[/quote]

 Hey Folio you better read the guitar trivia again before you start quoting, guessing is not a statement. 8)

It was a good guess Miguel. 8) Didn't mean to imply I was actually quoting you. :D

Phil, as far as I can tell the Solista is a renamed Cordoba Pro-F flamenco, but I've seen rosewood one's too so maybe its also replacing the Pro-R.

I lived in the Bay Area for 10 years before moving further north in search of fiscal sanity, so I know how tough it gets to justify another guitar! Are you a member of the South Bay Guitar Society? It's a great resource and there are always guitars for sale/trade. My main guitar now was purchased from a member who wanted to try something different, I'm thrilled with it! :D

Can't go wrong with the Loriente's though. Matching guitars? Intriguing....maybe that will work with the wife, "But Honey, they match!"

Hey Folio!

Just watend to clarify - the Solista is much, much more than a simple renaming. Every aspect is different, from the aesthetic details to the internal bracing, thicknesses, etc.

It has indeed replaced both the Pro-F and the Pro-R, as both the Solista Flamenco and the Solista Classical.

While the Pro series were great guitars in their own right, I'd highly suggest checking out a Solista. You'll notice the difference.

(And you're right, you can't go wrong with a Loriente! :D )

Cheers,
Dave

To sort of hitch hike on a Folio question, currently I am not a member of the South Bay Guitar Society. I attend some of their functions and have been threatening to become a member... But always seem to forget join until I attend the next function. I better become one quickly as they have expressed an interest in helping publicize and participate in a benefit concert my teacher and his wife are doing to raise money for my church's annual mission trip to Mexico to build houses. It also should include an auction of some pretty great stuff and a dinner cooked by several members who have owned resturants. (Guarenteed no church pot lucks... This will be really good food.) The target date should be some time in February we are still working on it, when it gets close to the date I will put up a thread on this forum and several others so that any one in the Bay Area can attend...

BTW Folio... The matching thing doesn't work at my house.... It's going to be sort of cold in the living room when I buy the next guitar... The question I keep on getting is, "Why do you need a new one, your old one sounds great?"

Any input,, spousal manipulation tactics or ideas will be greatly appreciated....

Phil
