A very good concert indeed. I remember how impressed I was when I first saw her 2 years ago and she was even better this time around. Ana is a very stunning woman, as soon as she walks on stage you could just hear several people "ah-ing". So I'm going to have to give a brief review since I'm on my way to a masterclass with Ana in about an hour....I'm thinking I should have done this last night while it was all fresh in my head...stupid me.

The Sor piece started off well. Interpretation throughout the whole song was very good although it seemed like her sound continued to fade throughout each movement.

Ana performed both Torroba pieces very well. Unfortunately I couldn't focus much on the Suite Castellana because the idiot woman who was sitting a few seats away from me kept talking on her cell phone....apparently sitting in the balcony gives you permission to quietly speak on your phone...idiot. The Sonatina piece however.....man oh man! This is one of Ana's favorite pieces as well as it is mine. The interpretation on this one was amazing! Everything from the vibratos, dynamics, timbre changes....especially that 2nd movement.

The Etude No.1 was played pretty darn fast which was very impressive, seemed like before you knew it, it was over. The Etude No.7 was performed very well, lot's of dynamic changes and very accurate on the scale runs. The only thing I noticed on that piece is it seem as if Ana had some trouble with the trills towards the end...they were very weak.

Asturias was fast and very accurate. Some small interpreted things here and there *I* didn't agree with but overall she played it very well. And I'm so glad she didn't rush the coda section like so many people do, although the E minor chord she ended with I wasn't crazy about...just left out the 3rd.

The Ponce piece was very interesting, I hadn't heard this one yet. My memory slips on this one but I remember noting that I'm adding this one to my repertoire...sorry folks, I really should have done this last night.

Ah the Sulek piece, this one I remember...a bit. Ana stated that this is the only piece composed for the guitar by a Croatian composer. One of a kind. This piece sound like a cross between Villa Lobos and Leo Brouwer. I think I'll leave this one up to the imagination...hopefully she has recorded it on her up and coming album.

La Catedral. So I had some problems with this one. The 1st movement was played way too fast and it seemed like the entire melody was played with free strokes. The 2nd movement was a bit strange. It seemed as if she was omitting certain parts and/or changing some of the chords. The 3rd movement however was great. This was played fast and very accurate with a lot of energy.

For an encore Ana played Recuerdos de la Alhambra. Her interpretation was very good although I would have liked to have heard a stronger melody. The accompaniment was almost louder than the melody. Her tremolo was very steady and flowing. I wish she would have taken all the repeats though, she just went through it without them.

Again I apologize for the brief review, I really should have done this last night. I was thinking of doing it after the masterclass that way I could put the review of the masterclass with the concert....although now that I've thought about it I'm not sure if I'll do a review on the masterclass. It almost seems pointless. I mean one of the primary factors behind music is interpretation, and not everyone interprets the same way. Plus what is said in a masterclass is for that particular person anyway, not necessarily going to benefit the rest of us....I don't know, I'll think about it some more. Sorry again folks.

i saw ana two or three years ago at the northwest guitar festival and she played some of that program. she did include Bach's sonata BWV 1001, which was great, the presto movement was bulletproof!. at the concert i saw she played Barrios's Alm for the love of God instead of Recuerdos and i thought it was really great.

Hello Classicalguitar83

My sincere complements for your review! For me it was as if a professional critic wrote this!

She already did this on a Naxos cd, their “Laureate Series” for Guitar.

Oh really? Guess I didn't notice that. I need to get my hands on her cds, I just keep passing them by....maybe it's cause I'm broke....could be.

How do you know that she ended Leyenda with an e minor chord if she left out the 3rd :P

Ha ha, yes I see where you're going with that. My response (you're touche) would be that the song typically ends in e minor, Ha!

Strummer... next time I play it I'll end with a picardy 3rd. Except, should it be loud or soft? :D

I heard her here in Baltimore about 2 weeks ago, basically the same program. Hey, what did you think of her Redgate? Any thoughts on the sound/tone/projection of that instrument?
