Just curious, I was searching for some voice and guitar duets, I have found Sor's pieces and Schubert's, but am curious to see which ones are popular (from any composer) with you all!
Thanks,
Todd Harris

The Britten songs are very good and not played that often. David Leisner has written some good songs as well…a set I once played is called “Heaven’s River.”
Although some will disagree, I think Dowland’s songs sound wonderful with guitar. And if you really want to have fun, bring in a clarinet player and try Webern’s Op. 18 songs…great stuff!!!

I heard a cd at a friends house that had Parkening and a lovely lady singing. Do a search for his cd's and you'll find it. Great singing, his playing?? ehhhhhh
But it had a selection of all types of music, villa-lobos, bach.....stuff like that.
Ok i'm back, I stopped the laziness and did a search myself. Kathleen Battle is the singer I was referring to. There's a cd called Angel's Glory that they did, but I don't think thats the same as I heard, but it does offer more selection of Traditionals and an Andrew York piece, but keep looking at those to see if you like any of them.

Check out Salli Terri and the "Duets with the Spanish Guitar" albums she did with Laurindo Almeida.

She will give you goosebumps on VL's "Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 - Aria", which is the second track here:

Hi Sandra,
I do not know if there exists a cd- version but I have an LP (vinyl ! ) : “Best Friends”
where Cleo Laine (voice) and John Williams (guitar of course) are performing.
But my favourite genre is the Renaissance period. I do not know if your question
was only confined to CD’s, but Karl Scheit has transcribed three beautiful pieces from
John Dowland. The sheet music is titled “John Dowland Three Songs” published by Universal Edition.
I can recommend trying to play the first song “Come Again” it is in my humble opinion a real beauty!
Joe.

Hi All,
Thanks for the links to guitar and voice-
especially Sandra who mentioned Salli Terri.
I was a privilege to meet her and the John BiggsConsort, and perform with them in the early 1970's.John Biggs was her husband.
She was beautiful, kind and an incredible musician.
I am so happy to see the website and know some music remains other than the two LP's I have.
Thanks again,
Jan

Hey lucid77
For something with a little more zip to them, try the "Canciones Espanolas Antiguas"
by Federico Garcia Lorca. Yes, the famed Spanish poet was also a musician! They are for piano and voice originally,
but I've only heard them recorded or performed with guitar. Actually I think Paco de Lucia has recorded them also,
but I can't remember who the singer was.
They are very colorful pieces that are real crowd-pleasers when they are played with all the passion that can be brought out in these pieces.
Good luck.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, "Divan of Moses-Ibn-Ezra". I can't recall how many songs are in the cycle but you can most definately pick and choose to make a nice set.

Wow, you played with Salli Terri? That's awesome! :D
Another "it's a small world moment"... I remember when Eva Cassidy was mentioned and Todd said he knew her in real life. :)
And I just remembered something I saw elsewhere so I went and dug it up.
Elizabeth Parcells was another wonderful singer whose time on this earth was too short. :( She was an opera singer who did quite a few duets with guitar. There are tons of MP3s and even a few scores on her site.

I have a lot of guitar and voice music and have performed some as well.
The Parkening cd that was mentioned is ok but I think there are many that are better and more accurate stylistically. I dont' care much for a soprano vibrating high notes on a light dowland song and some other things that I will keep to myself.
My favourite cd's for voice and guitar are as follows:
Las Mujeres y Cuerdas with Marta Almajano and Jose Miguel Moreno. What a wonderful recording this is. Beautiful voice and Moreno is a renowed player of historical instruments and uses a romantic guitar on this recording.
Ariette Italiane, Seguidillas & Variaciones. Also features Moreno with Monsterrat Figueras who is a famous singer in Spain (she did L'Orfeo etc).
Popular Spanish Songs with Liliana Rodriguez singing and Raphaella Smits on guitar. This one is very good and features the de Falla songs as well as the Lorca folk songs and some very nice Rodrigo songs.
Some other ok recordings are Lieder con Guitarra de Schubert y Weber, Canciones Populares Españolas, Pleasures of Their Company (Parking), and Songs for the Guitar (also with romantic guitar-Jakob Lindberg whose new Weiss cd I HIGHLY recommend).
Then there are some disasters like Songs with Guitar from the Age of Napoleon by McCormick. (shudder) Although I'm happy that he published the Martin y Soler songs.
I have personally performed the Villa-Lobos Bachianas and it's always received well. I have done some of Sor's Seguidillas which always are fun for the performers and even the audience if they speak spanish. The Martin y Soler songs are very simple and pretty and very indicative of the simple and crowd pleasing classical era. I have also done some of Rodrigo's songs and I must say they're very beautiful. The Giuliani Arias and Cavatinas are also really nice.
It might be a good idea to get some of these recordings and then decide which you like best and do those, that's what I did :)

Hi,
Yes I was lucky enough to sing with her when I was in highschool up here in Marin County.
My choir director and John Biggs studied music together in college-so they were gracious enough when doing a performance in the bay area to come and sing with us at our concert the same week in Mill Valley,Ca.
A real highlight, and as I said they were very kind people.
I believe it was 1972.
I was so shocked when I read recently she had died.
