I guess the title says it all.
It's pretty much a stretch for a contemporary artist to do something like this.

Not me!
I saw a video clip of it, and I would never buy that CD
Didnt even know about that one.
"Ten Summoners Tales" is definatly in my top 20
favorite pop albums of all time. Great, smart pop music.
Check out the song "7 days". Its a great pop tune, and its
in 5/4  You never think about the odd sig, its just
a great song. The guy's a genius!

I just got the CD today. I think it's great. It's nice to hear some Dowland without a singer singing in forced opera style as if trying to fill a huge hall.
The pieces were meant for small intimate settings and Sting portrays this nicely. Of course every once in a while he does these little inflections of sound that don't quite make one think renaissance.
Either way I like the approach and it's inspired me to add some vocals to my dowland repertoire.

It's a neat idea, but I think the execution sucks. I like Stings vocals pretty well. This kind of music suits his voice actually pretty well. My big problem is with this lutenist. His tone is just dreadfull. He sounds like he's playing a cheap tinny guitar. You want to hear great lute playing try listening to Paul O'Dette, Hopkinson Smith, and even Ron Macfarlane. The best I can hope for with this CD is that people will seek out more of Dowland's music, especially the songs which are under represented.

I picked this up earlier today, and the first impression is pretty good. Axel's point about a non-operatic voice singing these songs is valid, I think. This is the first Sting record I have bought since 10 summoner's tales, not bad at all.

You all have heard about Andy Summers collaborating with Ben Verdery, right. Interesting stuff...a composer at Yale named Ingram Marshall wrote a piece for Summers and Verdery, a guitar concerto. Me liked it. Ingram is a great composer.

Now, now, if ggus doesn't know who Sting is, don't mislead like that. Sting was the bassist/singer for The Police. ;)
I picked up the CD when I was at Target the other day. I'm digging it, but it will be interesting to see how it's received by his fans and commercial radio.
There are four full-length tracks you can listen to at www.sting.com if you're curious.
