Some weeks ago I commented on my first ever concert appeareances with orchestras, and promised to try and upload some clips, well, here I am doing so, these links are from the last concert I did, in a small 300 (not full) hall in Tegucigalpa, mainly because it was organized by the embassy and the public were just Government, diplomats and financial community people, auditorium of the BCIE Bank.

It is in chunks of 2 minutes more or less, due to restrictions.
This particular conductor was good to work with in rehearsals, but in concert, I felt abandoned, he had only conducted another guitarist before...his friend, Stephan Schmidt playing Ponce´s Concierto del Sur.

I´ll upload the rest soon, maybe also the other concerts.

Cheers.

Nice!! 8) Now that is a sweet gig!!

It looks like it would be fun, even if the hall was completely empty.

It just sounds so damn good!

You're playing position is pretty wild looking. Sorta Galbraith'ish.

Great job man! Really enjoyed watching and listening.

Wow. Nice one man! You sound great. The orchestra sounds alright (well that was somewhat diplomatic of a statement :) ) , but YOU really have a great energy and bouyancy to your playing that really carries the flow of the piece.

Thank you all for watching the performances of the first movement.
As I stated before, I played with the symphony orchestra here 2 concerts, one with 350+ people and the other around 800, but this in Honduras was a private one, Todd. But you are right, playing with orchestra, no matter how good ...or bad is an amazing experience that taught me a lot about guitar sound. I requested no amp for the small venues, and in the first one people could barely hear me, the second I used monitors and was better and the one you see here was without it, but the hall had, surprisingly good accoustics and I could fight with the sound, I feel it was flatter than I would play, because I was playing so hard to try to come out, but it is decent.

Overall it has been a great experience to further my learning, I think if I unify the 3 concerts, I can make one good one, but for starters, it was fair, I felt comfortable, no trembling, very confident of my capabilities, so I just hope to keep on playing with orchestras in the future, which seems rather probable, since I have comeback offerings and a possible concert in Geneve next year, as well.

I am sort of a Galbraith (a bought one guitar from him) disciple, if only by masterclasses and e-mails, Todd, but my position is a bit different, because I have and continue to develop it alone according to my body and technique needs.

I have finally uploaded all chunks of the 3 movements for you to judge:

What can I say? I am beyond impressed. Beautiful music, beautifully played. I wish I'd been there to hear it performed live!

I was out of touch with the classical guitar world from the mid-'80 to the mid- 2000's. Maybe things have changed, but back in the day I was disappointed in virtually every guitar/orchestra concert I ever attended -- including some shows by big names like Manuel Barrueco. But this performance sounds well balanced and confidently played. Guitarists can look so awkward and out of place with an orchestra, not so with you. It would be great if you continued to work with orchestras. You do it well and who knows, it could be a path to real international recognition for you.

May you have continued success.

MSG,
Thank you for your comments and watching the video clips.

Guitar Slim,
Your words are very encouraging, specially because I had the complex about playing with orchestra given the bad fame we guitarists have made for ourselves in that enviroment (conductors shy away from guitarists! :) )

I didn´t e-mail about meeting in NY, anymore, because I managed to get another connecting flight from NY to EUR, so there won´t be time for a little meeting, too bad, because it would have been great to meet you.

Cheers.

Hello Threax ,

I am desperately trying to install flash player on my computer for several weeks now
without any success. Sorry that I cannot see your performance! I would have loved to.
Is it possible to post it in such a way that I can use windows media player?

Joe.

Thraex,

Great work! Ah... second movement is so beautiful isn't it? I love how MCT can be so transparent in his orchestration. There's also that phrygian theme that's so pretty.

Rdubb--did you know that we (this awesome guy Scott Borg and I) played MCT's double concerto with an orchestra in the guitar chamber music recital in 2005 (my last one before graduation)? I wanted to do it with piano to keep it simple. Scott was all about the orchestra and with his Austrailian accent, charm and wit he actually got us some players and a conductor. Of course, we didn't have parts so guess what: we made parts for everyone by cutting up the score. Yea. 70-something pages of cutting and pasting. Our own parts were also cut from the score. Fun. Unfortunately, we can't seem to locate the recording. Maybe the concert was that awful.

First, congratulations on your performance! It's nice to see great musicians on this forum...

You're perhaps the first person I've seen play the guitar in a nearly "UPRIGHT" position. At the begnning of the video, I was kinda wondering where you were.. Then the camera zoomed and there you were playing in a cello like postion.

Im just wondering, do you really play guitar in a almost "upright" postion or was guitar really designed this way? SERIOUSLY... I haven't seen anyone who plays this way...

NONETHELESS.. GREAT PLAYING MAN!! CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!

I know Scott. He bought me a pitcher of guiness after my degree recital last december. I've heard him play, he's very very musical.

very nice playing, great interpretation and performance but what in the HOLY HELL are you playing with? the hole is in the wrong place! this is the first i've seen of you in video, what kind of guitar is that and who makes it?
thanks for the video!

Steve Lin: yes, it seems to me that MCT had an incredible talent for lyricism and his second movement is very felt, through the whole concert there is a strong connection of motives and themes, with a subtle orchestration, more in turns than in competition of power that enables us to feel as equals with the orchestra at most of the concerto. Thank you for watching!

Rainiert: I play guitar like you see on the video, upright position, that is! I felt after many years of search of my "center" position that this was the thing to go for, and so far I am not looking back, I have the complete freedom on both arms that I was searching and the guitars sound much better in this position, more open sound.

Joealders: ik dacht dat die video opname was makkelijk om mensen zu zien het, waarom hebt je problem met instellingen Flash?

thedrizzle: aahhh you critizicing my little girl!! uhuh...the hole is actually correctly placed, studies show that upper positions of the hole placement add substantially to sound production efficiency etc, when I requested that guitar, I was very specific about the qualities we should aim for in tone, sustain, balance and clarity, then my luthier Woodhouse worked on this design and so far I am more than happy :) I am the first in the world with it, although Paul Galbraith had a cheaper (plywood) experimental sent to him for trying and he dubbed it Picasso...so I agreed that is a very fitting name for the 1912 beginning of the serie of "guitares" paintings by Picasso thanks for watching!

“……..Joealders: ik dacht dat die video opname was makkelijk om mensen zu zien het, waarom hebt je problem met instellingen Flash?......”

Hello Threax,

The settings (instellingen) are not the problem. Windows XP simply does not allow me to install Flash Player!
I, in the end, contacted Microsoft but, their response was that they only want to help me if I am willing to pay them for a consult.
How cooperative is’nt it?

Joe.
