If your mommy won't help and you can't get renter's insurance, try either Clarion Associates or Heritage Insurance Services. They both specialize in musical instrument insurance and are known for fair rates and good service.
Google for their websites.

don't forget to insult
those 'children' who live home to be able
to care for their sick/elderly parents. and by doing so,
give their parents last years dignity rather than sending them
off to die in some cold nursing home.
pathetic you two!

I have insured my shop through Heritage for many years now and they are very good to deal with. Granted I have not had to file a claim but I have yet to hear about them not paying out on a claim. Good folks

I've been coming to this forum for many years and never wanted to post, because i used this forum as a tool of imformation and TechMaNac always asked the best question.
Here you all are making fun of him, WHY? Are you all fifteen years old.
BTW Howard a.k.a. TechMaNac is right you all dont know how to read, you cant answer one simple question with out going off to another within the question...

Golly shucks folks, did I say something wrong....again?
Why do people on this forum have such a hard time understanding simple English?
I actually looked at Mr. Techmanac's "myspace" page before posting for the first time in this thread and it appears, from the information that he chose to reveal for public scrutiny, that he is a 37 year old male with a child, in a relationship, and apparently not living with his mommy.
Get a grip.

Techmanac: I live in New York as well, and I am researching this need with a few Carriers I do business with frequently, on behalf on my clients. Now that my Ramirez is “in the house” I feel compelled to review the possibility. I will share with you my findings. Of course, location, doorman, and value of the instrument are variables which may change dramatically the premium.
Ah....Material possessions.... and the anxiety of losing them. Make treasures in heaven, someone wrote, where thieves cannot reach and rust cannot corrode. Yet this possession is our heaven, isn’t it?
On a side note: I did not read the original posts which Brian gallantly challenged. But the question doesn’t change...
This Forum is a wonderful opportunity to meet musicians of all levels of expertise and even luthiers, who will contribute and share their experience and invaluable opinions, not in exchange for money, but for the simple yet more noble purpose to further the appreciation and passion for the Classical Guitar. Certainly, some controversial issue will arise occasionally, and a healthy Forum will host its share of clashing opinions. But to ridicule and mock a fellow musician on a fair and candid question, seems to reveal a degree of devious boredom as the motivation for some posts.
You could still show Humor and Wit, by picking on the right party.... as the old proverb goes... when the Master points to the Moon, who looks at the finger?

This forum has been acting weird lately. I now know why! Because of you Mr. Michelob.
You changed this whole place to be more "sensitive". Even for the guys who used to be tough. They now behave politically correct and in sensitive Robin Hood ways!!
Like my friend Charlie would say: "Do we need a group hug?"

i was actually sticking up for a friend of
mine who catches a lot of abuse for living home.
he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't say why.
i know the reason
is to care for his mother. pure class.

let's lay this to rest

Sorry... I enjoy a joke and a witty come-back, but I am not very keen to entertaining buffoonery. I am not policing the Forum to purge it of its villains and their contempt of courtesy. The question on this thread is “house-insurance” for instruments. You can always start a thread where people may willingly submit to mutual mockery, may be even start a new Forum....
I enjoy reading Pedro and Iberianwolf’s postings, on their respective experiences, please do not misinterpret my words. I believe that allowing people the freedom to speak openly about their concerns is a great “gift” that may be lost by embarrassing them.
We do not need a “group-hug” .... but certainly a “group”... to make a Forum.
Dearly,
Michelob

I can see why you were at the point of chucking the towel in with this forum, at times it just gets pathetic with negative, subversive attitudes from certain members who usaually add nothing, but leave a trail of disgruntled, upset contributors. The guy has a genuine question, he deserves a civil answer if someone knows it.
Michelob, I think we can count on you for this one, my UK based companies will be no good to Techmanac.

Yes, the guy had a genuine question and I gave him a genuine answer....two of them in fact.
Why is this so hard to understand?
This thread is on its third page and I haven't seen any other suggestions or reccommendations whatsoever, just a bunch of the usual whining and complaints. What's wrong with this picture?

Techmanac, I am curious as to why you say you cannot get renters insurance. Do you live in an area that's been "red lined" because of high risk or is it just prohibitively expensive? What companies have turned you down?
It makes sense that it couldn't be insured thru your mother's policy if you (and your guitar) are not living with her. The only exception I'm aware of is generally for college students living away from home who can still be classified as dependents.

Here's what I've always assumed -- and please correct me if I'm wrong, because I could be in big trouble if I am.
Personal property is covered under most renters and homeowners insurance. Business assets are not. So, if you are a professional musician, your musical gear is not covered because it is a part of your business. But if you are hobbyist, your gear is considered personal property and is covered.
I haven't played a paying gig in at least 10 years, so I presume my guitars and other gear are covered by my homeowners insurance. I sure HOPE they are! Am I wrong?
Techmanac, just curious. Why can't you get renters insurance?

Slim, be careful of any advice on insurance you may receive from this forum. This is not because I feel someone may intentionally mislead you, but because all states have different insurance laws. What applies in NY may not apply in Arizona, etc. In NC a homeowner policy does cover personal property which includes musical instruments. However there are restrictions in the policy for how much they are covered for. For example, the endorsement for replacement cost on personal property does not automatically give this coverage to musical instruments. They have to be listed separately. Also, personal property is not covered for all perils unless it is scheduled. For example, your guitar may not be covered for damage that is the result of an object falling on it. You may want to call your agent to be sure what coverage you have and what endorsements you may need.

That would be my assumption as well. However, some policies limit the amount they will pay for certain categories (such as jewelry) and a "per incident" deductible may apply.
With musical instruments you can generally get "riders" tacked onto a policy based on value (you may have to provide receipts or appraisals or at the very least, a detailed list of items with model/serial #/etc.) that cover 100% with no deductible and will cover the instrument if you take it out of the home.
But if in doubt, call your insurance agent to make sure! :)

Hi Everyone,
Couple things: I made the "delete" post in response to someone advertising a website (bad one at that) and nothing else. They never visited our forum before then pasted a link multiple times with no explanation, so I removed it.
Regarding insurance, we have used Heritage as an agent in the past. Ellis is very nice and responsive. We have had claims over the years, and they were paid promptly. If you need a contact number, please call one of us at GSI.
Sincerely,
Tim

By the way, Techmanac,
This may seem obvious, but I hadn't thought about it before. My insurance agent advised me to take a bunch of digital pics, including receipts or documenation about the instrument and store it all in a safe-deposit box or with your agent. If your place goes up in smoke, all your records/files may be lost too.
Good luck,
ss
