Greetings,

Some of you I already know through other forums. I just purchased a Loriente "Carmen" this week via Dave Tate, and in the midst of making the arrangements for this purchase, he encouraged me to sign up.

So here I am.

Hi, David, welcome! We're mostly a friendly bunch and won't bite.

Please tell us a little about your background, CG history and what led you to this particular guitar.

Please tell us a little about your background, CG history and what led you to this particular guitar.

Let's see --

I've played CG for 35+ years. I'm originally from the L.A. area, and went through the Bachelor of Music program at Calif State University in Northridge, with an emphasis on 16th century musicology. Got out of school, and realized that the fact I could identify four different scribes in William Barley's 1596 "New Booke of Tabliture" was not impressing hiring managers very much at all. So I got a job-job as the mail clerk in the Human Resources department of a PVC manufacturer in L.A. One thing led to another, and thus my professional career since 1983 has been in HR Management, which I'm still doing 24 years later. Since 1991, I have lived in Salt Lake City UT.

My current CG activity is mainly on the Internet, and I tend to haunt the various forums frequently. I still play for my own amusement, and once every couple of years I will do a solo recital at our church, mainly to prove to myself that I can still do this!! :) I very much consider myself more of a musicologist and historian than a performer. I am especially attracted to the Segovia literature, and the guitar culture of the 1940s-1970s, with performers such as Julio Martinez Oyanguren, Vicente Gomez, Laurindo Almeida, Anatole Malukoff, Manuel Gayol, and their peers. I have a huge collection of LPs by many of these players.

I've bought and sold more guitars than I can remember; eBay truly IS a tool of Satan in this respect. My primary instruments are an '83 Greg Brandt, and an '04 Darren Hippner. I've been eyeballing the "Carmen" and "Angela" models for a couple of years now, and simply decided to take the plunge. So far so good, but with only about 4 hours playing time accrued it's too early to make commentary.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.

Hi Dave!

Another new guitar, huh? Man, you're worse than I am. :) How's that Johnny Walker working out for you? Are you getting used to it yet?

Hiya Sasquatch,

Sad to say, I have really mixed feelings about the Walker. By every reasonable empirical standard, it's a wonderful sounding guitar, plenty of volume and clarity and presence and juiciness. The trouble comes from the subjective side of the equation: I just don't think I'm a "cedar-top guy", no matter how much I try and delude myself otherwise. So the Walker may end up being sold, but it sounds so nice that I'm not wanting to throw in the towel quite yet.

Maybe it'll start to "grow on you" as you play it. I'm really enjoying mine. My cedar topped Walker shines for pieces in drop-D. It really seems to be able to project and sustain those low lows. The spruce one is just all-around an outstanding instrument. I hope it works out for you.

Enjoy your new one!

Hi David:
The Carmen is a good choice. If I were to buy a Loriente, that would be the best for the money.
