Guitar Alteration

Could anyone tell me why a guitar maker would cut the bridge.
I have an Esteve Spanish classical guitar that has a bridge which has been cut just on the lower side of the high e string perpendicular to the lenght of the bridge.
What is the maker trying to accomplish by doing this?

send an e-mail to ron fernandez who is the distributor of esteve guitars. i suspect he would know the answer--assuming of course the cut was done at the factory and not by some yahoo.
