dave tate: to catch your attention i say this: GUITAR FOR SALE. that said, is there a way to prevent folks from posting spam? it is getting really tiring to see this crap. given the creeps out there who like to distribute virus' it would be nice to prevent these bozos from posting. thanks.

I agree. It also seems as though these creeps know the GSI M.O. as they post on weekends. It is a shame that these #*$#@*% are out there.

Keith,

For the record, I don't have a bot scanning the forum for the words "GUITAR FOR SALE". I read every post regardless (as time allows).

When someone signs up to the forum, I have no way of knowing their intentions until they actually post. Both email verification and image verification are enabled, so it's as tight as I can make it right now.

The second I see bad posts, I delete them, which is usually within a few hours. There's also a "Report Bad Post" button on every post, feel free to click that, and I'll get an email immediately on my BlackBerry.

Thanks.

It's at the top right of every post: http://forum.guitarsalon.com/images/buttons/report.gif

Dave, one other thing you could do is to moderate new members where you have to manually approve them before they can post. (Admin CP > vBulletin Options > User Registration Options > Moderate New Members)

While this is not foolproof either, it will help you weed out the obvious, like fastcashpaydayloan or freeXXXpics.

If you don't want to moderate new members, you could periodically review the member list (sort by join date, go to the last page) to see what your new signups are and if they've posted anything yet.

I just reported another 'thread' by a certain 'mukilops' using this sign at
the top right. Yes, it is a pitty that our Forum is being ravaged now and then
by those bstrds!!
I am visiting our Forum almost every day and start first looking for
those 'threads', and report them immediately to Dave using that sign.

Joe.

It also seems as though these creeps know the GSI M.O. as they post on weekends.Has anyone considered that this could be the work of a disgruntled forum member who keeps signing up under different user names? A current member who's dissatisfied with the activity here on the forum? What went on in the "Thriller" thread sure was suspicious. And now this "Francisco Vega" guy really crossed the line with this "George Bush" thread. Maybe he's someone we've known before?

I'm a moderator on another forum and I can tell you that this is a widespread problem. We found that the vast majority of the spammers use the free email services so we just simply banned all of those email providers and the spamming stopped.
