Description

Based out of South Africa, luthier Hans van den Berg has been building concert classical guitars since 1996. He bases the soundboard design (plantilla and bracing) very closely on the work of Daniel Friederich. Like the great French master, he also doubles his sides - but with Kiaat (instead of mahogany) lining on the inside with Indian rosewood on the exterior, which Hans feels greatly improves the sustain. Several Friederich players (including Eduardo Fernandez) who have played Hans' instruments have noted some similarities in tone between the two makers - a very silky, textured and rich quality of sound, while at the same time clear in every register. When it comes to the aesthetics, no comparison can be drawn between Hans and other makers - his style is distinctly his own and draws heavily on his African influences. The wood used for the head veneer is African Blackwood with Kiaat inlays. The purfling and tie block veneer is figured Kiaat. African blackwood has also been used for binding, and back center seam as well as tail block inlay. The rosette is made of figured Kiaat, ebony and maple with Abalone dots. The guitar has substantial power and can easily fill any sized concert venue. Playability is also very easy, Hans pays particular attention to setup so as to ensure a very smooth neck and easy concert action. Overall a very impressive and unique instrument by all standards.
