So here’s the beginning of putting together some Soleá. Once you get the hang of how the different parts of the compás go together it gets really easy to choose elements from all over the place to use in your own Soleá. That’s how it becomes very personal despite the fact that we’re all playing variations on the same few ideas – you take bits and pieces from players you like (always making sure it all fits in compás, of course) and put them together into your own thing. Then with time you start writing your own variations, which evolve into falsetas, and before you know it you’re composing your own material.
