There’s a bunch of different ways to get wood to make guitars, but at some point someone has to cut down a tree, cut it up into backs, sides, tops, necks, etc.. and let it dry for a good long time. Sometimes, the someone who’s chopping down the tree is actually the luthier. Bernd Martin sent me these photos of a Cypress tree he had just gotten his hands on, but we won’t see any guitars made from this for quite a while. He called it ciprés de Aranjuez, or ciprés Moruno.

    I bought a set of home cut cypress in Granada about 10 years ago. Really lovely stuff.
