I just discovered Gary Ryan, mostly because he’s playing a guitar made by my very good friend Stephen Hill, an English luthier who lives and works in La Heradura, which is on the Granada coast. I met Stephen in 1988 the first time I went to Spain, and I still have the 8th guitar Stephen ever made, back in 1989. Anyway, this Gary Ryan is a pretty impressive player, so enjoy. The first piece is his and the second is some Bach.

I was very impressed with Benga Beat! To me, the piece is quite captivating. Gary needs to be congratulated for a composition not only filled with such “catchy” rythms and melodies, but also a balanced form – somewhat close to a Rondo, IMHO. More information about him would be greatly appreciated, i.e. education, does he concertize, teach, live in CA, etc? Thanks so much for posting this! More from him would be wonderful.

Just got around to viewing this, and I have to say that Benga Beat was simply astonishing. Sight unseen, I would have said you couldn’t do that on a guitar. Lovely and surprising music; thanks for posting it.
