Ben Woods called and said he wanted to check out the new Ethan Deutsch negra (Ben’s from Seattle and they’ve known each other for a while). I, of course, wanted to shoot videos of him trying it, but we’re installing new floors in the showroom, so we decided to bring some guitars to my studio and shoot the videos there. The lighting is a little weird, but we still got to shoot some great video of Ben doing his thing, and we’ll have a couple more soon. So here’s Ben playing Heavy Mellow and Tarantula on the new negra.

Our good friend Ben Woods just recorded some great videos of his arrangements of surf classics Walk Don’t Run and Sleepwalk with the Cordoba 55FCE Limited (and he plays the actual guitar we have in stock at the moment). Both arrangements are in Ben’s unique style and he even breaks down Walk Don’t Run at the end of that video.

In the latest episode of Scott Wolf’s podcast All Strings Considered Scott talks with Flametal pioneer Ben Woods. Readers of this blog will know Ben well, but may not know his metal side as well, so this may make for a revealing interview, and I know there will be some great music.

In Scott’s words:

“There are certainly some clear parallels between flamenco and heavy metal guitar playing: the search for an ever more blindingly virtuosic technique, the attraction to complexity, their driving rhythm and aggressive edge. A highly sought after accompanist of flamenco dance and cante, Benjamin Woods is the creator of some really great fusions in this vein.

Ben Woods had just picked up this guitar for himself the day before we recorded this and he was (and is) really into it. Here he is playing ‘Bamboleo’.

Here’s more of Ben Woods playing the GSI Studio Series Flamenco model. I’ve had that Tango stuck in my head since Friday when we recorded it (not a bad thing). And while I’m clearly biased, I think that’s an awesome guitar for the money. I’m thinking of getting one and putting a MIDI pickup in it, since I don’t really want to put holes in my other guitars. Any MIDI guitar gurus out there? Last time I messed with that stuff I had mixed results, probably as a result of my impatience, but it may be time to give it another whirl. Has the state of the art (I guess I use the term ‘art’ loosely when it comes to MIDI) advanced at all?

Guitarist Ben Woods was in last week and recorded a bunch of guitars, including the GSI Studio Series FC100 flamenco. I didn’t use any reverb at all on the recording – that’s all the room and the guitar.
