Russian-born and Israeli-raised classical guitarist Yuri Liberzon has been recognized for his impressive technical ability and musicality. USCIS has granted Mr. Liberzon ‘Alien of Extraordinary Ability’ United States Permanent Residency based on his achievements in the music field.
Here’s Yuri Liberzon playing Manuel Barruecos’ transcription of Astor Piazzolla’s Tango Etude No. 6 (originally written for solo flute) on an absolutely stunning 1912 Manuel Ramirez, built the same year as Segovia’s iconic Manuel Ramirez that now lives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The guitar comes from the Russell Cleveland collection and its history is extensively documented.
Here’s Yuri Liberzon (who helped us with our mic shootout) playing Leo Brouwer’s arrangement of Piazzolla’s La Muerte del Angel on a lovely 2003 Robert Ruck (ex. Barrueco) from the Russell Cleveland Collection. Yuri was a student of Barrueco at Peabody and owns a Ruck himself, so this was a perfect pairing.
It’s been another amazing year for guitar music over here at GSI and as the year wraps up we’d like to take a moment to thank all of the amazing musicians who have lent us their time and talent to create the great videos we publish every week. We obviously couldn’t do any of it without them and we are extremely grateful for the music and for the friends we’ve made over the years in our quest to record every guitar we can get our hands on! So here, in more or less reverse order of appearance, are the artists who have shared their talent with us this year:
2016 was a pretty epic year for videos at GSI. Of course we constantly try to improve the quality of our videos, but when the Russell Cleveland collection arrived in late 2015 we knew we had to step it up and document these historic instruments before they found new owners all around the world. To that end we brought on digital media producer Tara Stewart, who was just back from a sabbatical in Spain after producing all of Fender’s videos in Los Angeles for three years before that. We upgraded our gear so that we now shoot with three Canon 5D Mark iii cameras, and Apogee Digital lent us one of their amazing Ensemble thunderbolt interfaces. With Tara on video duties I was able to spend more time on audio and hopefully improve what I already thought was pretty good audio quality. And with two of us on the team now, we were able to double our output of videos.
Guitarist Yuri Liberzon called to arrange a video shoot and we got to talking about microphones. Yuri has a pair of Oktava mk012 modded by Michael Joly at OktavaMod and he wanted to see how they stacked up to a real pair of Neumann km84’s, which we use here for the videos we shoot. So rather than stop there we decided to compare a bunch of pairs of small-diaphragm condenser (SDC) mics. In the end we used Yuri’s OktavaMod mk012’s, a pair of Neumann km84’s, a pair of Neumann km184’s and a pair of AKG 451’s with ck28 capsules (rather than the much more common ck1 capsule which most people associate with the 451). And since we could, we decided to use Segovia’s Ramirez that he owned and played from 1969-1981, and which is part of the Russell Cleveland Collection.
