sedona_villa-lobos

When Sedona Farber came in for videos she was very curious to play the 1969 Segovia Ramirez, so we recorded her playing Villa Lobos’ Etude 12 on this amazing guitar. It’s a very impressive performance, and not just ‘for her age’!

15-year-old Sedona Farber doesn’t really need to have her age before her name any more. In the past year she’s been winning competitions including the Junior division of the GFA Youth Competition and even first prize in the Sierra Nevada Guitar Competition (which was not a ‘junior’ competition), to name a couple. Sedona’s technique is fantastic and her musicality is also superb. Here she is playing Tarrega’s Fantasia on a Theme from la Traviata on a beautiful 2007 Dominique Field.

sedona

Here’s 14-year-old Sedona Farber, a student of Vasil Chekardzhikov and Jack Sanders who currently attends the Orange County High School For the Arts, playing Rodrigo’s ‘Tiento Antiguo’ on a great 1999 Enrico Bottelli spruce-top.

Sedona is a serious up-and-comer on the guitar scene, and she has already won or placed in numerous competitions including first place in the 2015 GFA International Youth Competition, Indiana University International Guitar Competition, Texas International Guitar Competition, Pacific Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Association, MACOC, and Sierra Nevada Guitar Competition. She recently performed at the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center and the Webb Theater with Walter Molina. 2016 was a pretty epic year for videos at GSI. Of course we constantly try to improve the quality of our videos, but when the Russell Cleveland collection arrived in late 2015 we knew we had to step it up and document these historic instruments before they found new owners all around the world. To that end we brought on digital media producer Tara Stewart, who was just back from a sabbatical in Spain after producing all of Fender’s videos in Los Angeles for three years before that. We upgraded our gear so that we now shoot with three Canon 5D Mark iii cameras, and Apogee Digital lent us one of their amazing Ensemble thunderbolt interfaces. With Tara on video duties I was able to spend more time on audio and hopefully improve what I already thought was pretty good audio quality. And with two of us on the team now, we were able to double our output of videos.

Collection13

As another year closes on us we once again get to look back at all the great guitars that came through GSI and especially all the great people who came through to play them for us. This year ended in a such a big way – with our acquisition of the Russell Cleveland collection – that it reminded us all just how cool it is to get to steward these amazing guitars on their way from owner (or in this case collection) to owner, and also to document them for posterity.

jack

Here’s a lesson from Jack Sanders, who in addition to performing and building guitars teaches some of the best young players in the country (including Sedona Farber and Jennifer Kim, whose videos will appear here soon). In his first lessons for GSI Jack looks at scales as the foundation for a comprehensive left and right hand technique. Part 1 covers posture and the left hand. Jack is playing a 2013 Richard Reynoso cedar-top.
