Our good friend Vahagni just released his new CD ‘Imagined Frequencies’ this month (you can get it on iTunes and Amazon) and he stopped by to show us some falsetas from Pomegranates, one of the Bulerias from the new CD. There’s nothing easy about these falsetas, even at the slowed down speed he shows us, and the tuning is drop B, so take your time and have fun with some seriously challenging material. Vahagni plays a great 1981 Alejandro negra for this video. And below you can check out the official video for Pomegranates to hear the whole track.
It’s easy to make things sound complex. What’s much harder is to make complexity sound easy. In Imagined Frequencies, his latest recording released on September 8, 2015 Los Angeles-based guitarist and composer Vahagni weaves in both, his playing and his compositions, strands from several styles and traditions — flamenco and classical music, Armenian music and jazz. Yet the overall result has a rare, easy-on-the ear quality that belies its many influences.
“At the end of the day we are all searching for a melody, for a story in the music,” says the Armenian-born guitarist. “And when I write, even when it gets very abstract or might have dissonances, I think naturally about the melody as a way to tie everything together.”
Vahagni: “Dear friends, I am happy to announce that I will be playing at the Blue whale Nov. 21st at 9pm. Joining me will be Artyom Manukyan, Gavin Salmon and Gerardo Morales, should be super fun! Hope to see you there.”
We shot these videos before hearing the sad news of Manuel Reyes’ passing, but it’s a great chance to hear yet again a bit of the magic that made his guitars so beloved among players. Here’s Vahagni playing the same Buleria on 2 guitars – a 1972 Manuel Reyes blanca with pegs and then a new Francisco Navarro Garcia ‘Reyes’ model. The Buleria is an excerpt from a piece that will be on Vahagni’s new CD due out in the Spring of 2015. These were both recorded using the Telefunken ELA M260 tube mic system with the cardioid capsules.
I asked Vahagni to come record some videos to show off the Telefunken ELA M260 mics I was borrowing (Check out the Telefunken site here if you want to know more). We chose the Graciliano Perez blanca and Negra to try out first, so here’s Vahagni playing excerpts from some of the pieces that will be on his upcoming CD (due out in 2015) on the Graciliano Perez blanca and then the negra.
Armenian-born guitarist Vahagni was at GSI last week to play some guitars, and as he had to make a video for his column in Fingerstyle 360, we decided to just shoot it at the showroom. So here he is playing a Bulerias falseta and then breaking it down for us on a great 1994 Jose Marin Plazuelo flamenco.
