Intro To Flamenco & Compás
OK – so it turns out you can’t explain flamenco in 6 1/2 minutes, but February is flamenco month at GSI, so I tried to cram a lot of information into a very short amount time to give a very basic idea of the tonality of the flamenco-phrygian thing and then of what the whole compás thing is all about. The first video is for anyone who plays guitar but not flamenco, and wants a little overview of what’s going on. I’ll look at some actual music and a few of the techniques that are unique to flamenco in coming videos. I’ll post a couple of these a week and if by the end of the month you haven’t learned anything useful, well, I’ll give you your money back. And I’ll have some friends do videos, too, so you don’t get sick of me.
The second video is a bit more advanced – for people who already play flamenco and are trying to improve their compás. It’s one of the best tricks I know for learning to feel really comfortable with your compás. This video will make a lot of sense if you’ve been at flamenco for a while, and less if you’re newer to this whole thing. I’ll post some more like this, as well, throughout the month.
