Manuel Espinás – La Catedral

manuel1

Manuel Espinás is a Cuban-born guitarist who is currently professor and chair of guitar studies in the School of Arts, BUAP and professor in UDLAP (Universidad de las Américas Puebla), both in Puebla, Mexico. He’s an old friend of luthier Federico Sheppard, so when he was in town last week we shot some videos of Manuel playing Federico’s guitars, which are both replicas of guitars that Barrios used to play. One is a replica of a ‘Morant‘ and the other of a 1934 Esteso (Sheppard is an authority on Barrios). Here’s Manuel playing Barrios’ ‘La Catedral’ on the Morant model.

Beautiful tone from the Sheppard ‘Morant’ guitar as well as the excellent artistry of Manuel Espinas. Agustin Barrios is one of my favorite guitarist/composer of all time.

Well, you should less less responsive strings on this guitar, as it doesn’t need them. And Frederico has done a good job on this style, I like it better than most guitars.

The price is under rated…should be more.
