Students awarded with GSI Foundation Scholarship perform at the Brockton Avenue Elementary School

News

Recently, the children at the Brockton Avenue Elementary School had a unique opportunity to hear music performed by the GSI Foundation scholarship recipients from the USC Thornton School of Music – Mircea Stefan Gogoncea and Tomasz Fechner. The guitarists together performed a concert featuring solo and duo compositions from around the world, including Italy, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Cuba and Spain. In addition to playing music, both Mircea and Tomasz engaged the children with stories about featured music compositions as well as a Q&A session. For those of you who don’t know, GSI Foundation established a scholarship for USC students who volunteered above and beyond in USC outreach concerts.

The goal of these concerts is not only to expose children to music performed by professional musicians, but also to inspire children to do music in general. We received very positive feedback from the school’s staff members:

“…Our students (and staff) were incredibly pleased with the performance and were amazed that such mesmerizing music can come out of the guitar. It was truly captivating and inspirational to our little musicians…”

Mircea and Tomasz will perform more concerts such as the one at the Brockton Avenue Elementary School. On March 24th they will perform a concert at Castle Heights Elementary School.

We’d like to thank the Children’s Music Workshop and the principals of the two aforementioned schools for making these performances possible. We believe that such concerts are very impactful and motivating for young music students.
