Tomatito, Eva Yerbabuena and Canales in Los Angeles

News

tomatito

We have an amazing week of flamenco coming up in the Los Angeles area in March, so I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the great shows. These are some of the biggest acts in flamenco right now (and for the past 20 years, really), so you’ll want to catch as many of these as you can.

On March 11 Tomatito and his sextet, including the amazing young dancer Paloma Fantova will be at the Irvine Barclay. Last time I saw Tomatito in the US was 1992, so I’m really looking forward to this.

On March 14 the legendary dancer Antonio Canales will be at the Valley Performing Arts Center with Karime Amaya, Jesus Carmona and more. Canales is one of the leading innovators in flamenco dance and his company has been an incubator for great guitarists and musicians, so you can bet the music in this show will be fantastic as well.

On March 15 and 16 Eva Yerbabuena will be at the Irvine Barclay. I had the good fortune to see Eva dance a lot 20 years ago when I lived in Granada and she was just starting out, and she’s become a superstar. Her guitarist/music director/husband Paco Jarana is amazing, too, and worth seeing in his own right.

Also on Sunday March 16 Estrella Morente, daughter of Enrique Morente (one of the great singers of the 20th and 21st centuries whom we recently lost) will be at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
