Description

Valerio Mongillo has been working as a luthier for over 30 years, building classical and flamenco guitars ever since the very early stages of his career. He attended the School of Research and Design in South Stratford, Vermont, under the direction of Charles Fox, as well as the Violin Craftsman Institute hosted by the University of New Hampshire from 1983-1993. Currently, Valerio is the owner of a violin shop called "Old Mill Violins" in Kennebunk, Maine where he builds and repairs stringed instruments as well as classical/flamenco guitars.

This guitar was generously donated by Valerio Mongillo to the GSI Foundation in April, 2020. Valerio told us that this instrument is inspired by Santos Hernandez guitars. The guitar is in excellent condition with a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides. There are no cracks or repairs. Even though the guitar has a traditional feel, there are small accents in the look of this instrument that make this guitar very characteristic and unique, such as a "c" cut in the headstock and a small ornament (a whale tail) in the back. The whale tail is an homage to the beautiful state of Maine, where Valerio lives. The guitar is ornately inlayed and represents almost 30 years of Valerio's experience in making instruments.
