Description

Gerardo Escobedo was born in 1979 into a long family line of respected luthiers - indeed his father is luthier Salvador Esobedo, and Gerardo grew up learning the craft in his father's workshop with his brothers, Jaime, Jesus and Robert. He made his first guitar when he was 16, and went on to continue his studies at the Escuela Superior de Musica de la EJUD. He has won awards in several major guitarmaking competitions, most notably first prize in 2007 at the National Competitions in Uruapan and Patzcuaro and 2nd prize in 2009, in an international competition held annually in Paracho with 500 contestants! He builds guitars in a humidity controlled environment in the otherwise very dry city of Paracho, Mexico.

This is really an exceptionally well-made instrument - with only a few minor details (including most obviously the back and sides which are maple and not cypress), it is based almost exclusively on the famous "La Leona" Torres of 1856. Fitted with a wooden tornavoz, it has a deep, low body resonance and sparkling trebles. Although the bridge is similarly shaped to the original, it is "modernized" with standard saddle and tie block for ease of stringing up and adjusting action. Fit and finish are at the highest level - the quality of build, sound, playability and overall aesthetic is shocking for the price - which of course is introductory as we offer our first guitar from what we believe to be Mexico's top "up and coming" luthier - we met with Gerardo recently and were as charmed by the person as with his instrument and we have agreed to be his exclusive US dealer. This is a fantastic guitar for an incredible price!
