If you’re planning to be in the lovely Tampa-St. Petersburg area of west-central Florida sometime before the end of May, you really should drop by the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete and check out “The Art of the Classical Guitar” exhibit. Drawn largely from the collection of local philanthropists/collectors Robb and Susan Hough, the exhibition is showcasing a slew of beautifully crafted instruments spanning the 1880s to the 1990s. You’ll find an 1890 Spanish pine and bird’s-eye maple Antonio Torres guitar there, as well as a 1937 Hermann Hauser I—said to be the “twin” of Andres Segovia’s beloved ’37 Hauser (which is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York)—and lots more.

The museum is also sponsoring a number of Sunday afternoon concerts in conjunction with the exhibit, including appearances by Jason Vieaux (March 20), Adam Holzman (April 17), Jérémy Jouve (May 1), and Andrew York (May 15). GSI’s own David Collett and JohnPaul Trotter will be there on Saturday, May 7 for a talk. Click here for more info.
