We met Swiss guitar builder Darragh O'Connell at the 3rd International "Antonio Marin Montero" Guitar Building Competition in Granada, Spain in 2019, where he took first prize. And this guitar which he built for us has everything and more that we heard in the award-winning instrument. Built to the same specs as the guitar in Granada, it's made with cedar top and Indian rosewood back and sides. The top has a 7 fan bracing system (the middle 5 in spruce and the outer 2 in cedar) with a transverse bar under the bridge. The sides are also laminated internally with mahogany. Although Darragh's influences are many, we see (and hear) in this instrument a clear connection to the work of Daniel Friederich. The thick, resonant, cathedral-like resonance of cedar Friederich guitars is present, but at the same time, it is blended with a more lightweight feel, quick, snappy attack and lightning-fast response in all registers. It has a rich variety of tonal colors, which for a cedar top is difficult to achieve, and yet still has a rich overtone content typical of cedar. Darragh's aesthetic is also exceptionally beautiful, his refined and tasteful inlay work in the rosette and tie-block is meticulously executed and blends naturally with the rest of the materials in the instrument. Overall a superb instrument in every way. We look forward to many more of his guitars in the future!
